Cat allergy

My DD (16yo) has an allergy to cats. We don't have one but a relative does and up until recently it would cause my DD to get itchy eyes and be a bit sneezy when we saw the relative at their house which was quite infrequently. She has become friends with someone who has cats and she is visting their house more frequently and the allergy seems to be escalating, her face becomes swollen and yesterday she became quite wheezy. I am giving her an antihistamine but I'm not sure what else I can do. Do you think it's worth a visit to her GP or will we get laughed out of the surgery and told to stay away from cats!
