A friend is coming to lunch next week who only eats gluten free. I don't want to keep bombarding her with questions and make her feel awkward..but would dips (sour cream, guacamole) be ok? These would be shop bought, not home made. Also, would rice have to be a special gluten-free one? Thank you!

Dips would normally be OK, and if shop bought the label would have gluten content highlighted on the label. Rice is fine, but you need to check stock cubes, soy sauce etc

Is your friend coeliac, or gluten-intolerant? Anything I say here is based on my DD, who is gluten-intolerant but not coeliac!

Rice is naturally gluten-free so is no problem.
Shop-bought dips - check the labels. I'd expect sour cream etc to be gluten-free but it came to a surprise to me to find how many things gluten sneaks into when I started having to check.

Definition check labels, wheat, rye barley and oats are not t suitable for coeliacs and the label will tell you if they are present. Incidentally that accuracy of ingredient information is thanks to the EU when we were members.

Unless something is marked as gluten free check the labelling for Barley, Rye, Oats and Wheat. If she is coeliac then gluten free marked or something that doesn't contain the above ingredients will be fine.

However if she has a separate allergy to one of the above you will need to swerve them too, even if gluten free. Happy to check labels if you are unsure.

Thank you all so much Thanks. Will do some research and label reading!
