Irish soda bread is yummy (I think that is wheat free)

Soda bread is indeed yummy - but not wheat free.

None of it is very nice tbh! Antoinette Saville wheat free/gluten free bread from Waitrose is not too bad - a bit like unsweetened cake though...

If it's a fondue, does everyone dip into a communal dish? If they do, then everything will be wheaty anyway.

fizzbuzz · 02/12/2007 13:24

ermm....rye bread...? (or does that have wheat in as well?

noonar · 02/12/2007 19:04

thanks, i wasnt sure if you could get 100%rye bread. will check out waitrose

I used to bake my own with wheat free flour and even that was a bit nasty tbh.

If she is just slightly intolerant then I would get spelt flour. It can be slightly easier on the gut.

Otherwise corn bread is quite nice.

thanks, good tip.

It basically doesn't exist. Wheat-free bread is gak-tastic. And yes, if everyone's dipping into the same bowl she won't be able to eat it anyway, hopefully you can put some aside for her?

Maybe try the Terence Stamp stuff you can get in Sainsbury's? Or the free from pitta breads, which at least aren't meant to have a bread-like consistency. And maybe offer other things to dip, like veg.

Peachy · 02/12/2007 19:19

Have to agree with all the above

Pitta breads from the gf range are actually nice as someone said (DS1 loves them), and you canmake potato bread with GF flour which apparently is nice, haven't got round to it yet though.

I like the Terence Stamp stuff (though the man himself is a grumpy git, but there we are.........)

noonar · 02/12/2007 20:52

thanks all. she is not allergic, so not worried about 'contamination' by wheat-lol
