CMPA, Nutramigen reaction

Hi everyone,

DS is 15 weeks and over Easter we introduced formula (previously EBF). BF has been hard, painful & exhausting and I’m more than ready to switch to formula feeding now.

Unfortunately he came out in a hives-like rash within a few days & his reflux got worse so we suspect CMPA (it went away when we stopped formula). I’ve gone dairy free too but obviously it’s still in my system for a couple more weeks. He was prescribed Nutramigen but again, within a day his rash was back and his reflux worse again, so it seems he’s reacting to that too. We stopped giving that on Monday and he was better, although the rash came back with a vengeance on Wednesday and looked like sunburn!

The doctor I spoke to on Monday was hesitant to prescribe Neocate as ‘it’s similar to Nutramigen’ and referred us to see a paediatrician. That appointment isn’t for another month.

I’d love to continue EBF until then but I’m really struggling mentally and LO isn’t feeding well, I don’t know if my milk is enough for him. I spoke to another doctor yesterday who was a bit rude and told me if I ‘don’t want’ to BF then I’d have to deal with him having a reaction to the formula Angry. He also said that giving him the formula once wasn’t good enough (we gave it more than once) and made out like I was an over-anxious/unwilling mother!

Now I’m feeling trapped. Trapped by breastfeeding for one thing but also trapped that I’m going to have to give him formula that’s hurting him because my milk doesn’t seem to be enough. They won’t make the referral urgent either Sad

Has anyone had a similar situation where Nutramigen didn’t work? Did you have to see a paediatrician? What was the outcome? I don’t know what to do to get the best solution for my LO. I feel so so guilty for giving him formula in the first place, that I’ve failed him Sad
