Anyone with cat allergies please help...

I'd be grateful for your wisdom and any suggestions other than no contact! My partner has two beloved cats and rehoming isn't a possibility.

Is there anything I can do to mitigate against the congestion, snottiness and heavy head I get every time I stay? My nose also peels ... bizarrely.

Standard anti histamine allergy tablets make little difference. I just feel dreadful when I've stayed overnight and two days almost kills me.

There is a brand new cat food on the market that is supposed to stop the allergens in a cats saliva and dander. Will see if I can find a link.

He comes to your house?

He probably needs to keep his bedroom cat free all the time not just when you are there and banish them from the lounge for your visit if that is possible depending on the house with a damp dust and hover before you arrive.

Obviously don’t touch them and wash your hand frequently.

I couldn’t cope so it would be a deal breaker for me.

Keep the bedroom cat free and make sure he hoovers everywhere before you come round. He also needs to damp dust at least once a week.

Have you tried a combination of anti histamines? Sometimes one on it’s own isn’t enough.

Petal cleanse from amazon really helps. You just rub it on the cats every 5-7 days or so. Keep them out of his bedroom and put throws on sofas that he removes/changes when you come over. Also you can get stronger anti histamines or try combining different types but take them every day not just add one off.

See your GP as I'm pretty sure there are super strength antihistamines that you can't buy over the counter which might help?

Sorry forgot to add, a few salt lamps or an ioniser help to keep hair and dander on the ground and an air filter cleans the air too.

Wooden floors are better than carpet and keep them out of the bedroom at all times. Try putting a barrier on your nose like the hay fever pollen ones (or Vaseline).

Montelukast helps at night time, I got a prescription from the doctors for it and it has been great!

Air cleaner/purifier .... my sister had the same problem, she had a vax unit, it was white & like a cylinder shape, it helped ease the symptoms hugely.

Strangely enough over time she has been symptom free without using the unit It appears that your immune system builds tolerance over time.

And FYI the cat was hers, a new kitten ... she now has 2 cats with no allergy symptoms & she doesn't need to use the Vax air purifier anymore.

You might find you get used to the cats.

I'd go to pharmacist and see if they can prescribe you lots of compatible anti-histamines.

Visit a salt cave.

Saline nose rinse (really helping my son's hay fever right now)

Vitamin c is a natural anti histamine

Keep cats out of your room.

Wash hands if you touch them.

Pets a home have a wipe that helps with allergies.

If he has a bath have a relaxing salt bath too.

I shall trot off to the pharmacy /pets at home tomorrow and see what I can find.

Partner is super house proud and hoovers constantly but we may need to invest in a different type of vacuum cleaner. I like the sound of the air purifiers too.

That's my unconscious bias showing there! Thanks for pointing that out. (I'm being genuine).

The salt stuff has really helped me and my son. He hated doing the nasal rinse at first (we joked it was his daily torture) but now that he's felt the benefits he actually offers to do it.

There's loads of things you can eat an drink too to get some relief. Look it up online. Lots of it is aligned with pampering (salt baths, good food, chamomile tea to drink and use tea bags on eyes) so get your partner to pamper you!

Apparently you need an air purifier with a hepa filter. This removes dander from the air. I'm allergic to cats and own two. The good news is that you do build up a tolerance to them over time so this may improve on its own!

I actually adore the cats but I pay quite a heavy price for that at the moment so anything that alleviates symptoms is a winner.
