Could this be Coeliac Disease?

If you have been diagnosed with Coeliac, what were your symptoms?
I have an endoscopy Friday and wondered if it's worth asking to test for it whilst they are in there, heard they can? I might be wrong? I'm having the scope done due to horrendous heartburn for 9+ months and I've also had excessive bloating/gas, feeling sick and just constantly uncomfortable inside! I haven't ever tried gluten free diet and was told not to before the scope.
Just wondered other people's experiences or symptoms and if anything has helped?
Thanks Sad

The symptoms of CD are many and varied, and over-lap with several other conditions. I had no obvious symptoms at all when I was diagnosed.

There's no harm in asking for them to consider taking biopsies to check for coeliac disease whilst they're doing a gastroscopy. Have you not mentioned this to your doctor before? The blood test is fairly accurate (but still needs the gastroscopy to confirm). You won't get a definite CD result on the day from a gastroscopy, the samples taken need to be prepared and checked under a microscope. Sometimes they might be able to see strong indications, but it always needs the microscope to confirm.

By the way, I recommend the banana spray and sedation. Have a lovely snooze. Expect a sore throat the day after.

Thank you for your reply. I have gone for sedation although have been told your still quite aware and uncomfortable. I will get through it I'm sure!
I did mention it all to my doctor but she just told me I may need to be on omeperazole for the long term if the gastroscopy comes back normal. Which it probably will!!! I just don't see how all this horrendous heartburn and bloating can be nothing...

Today has been worst for a while, maybe because I'm getting anxious about tomorrow.
But thank you for your response. Do you have to follow quite a strict diet now?

When I came round from the sedation - I dropped off into a deep sleep and had a lovely snooze - I had the vague recollection of something unpleasant being done, but couldn't recall any details. I'm someone that gets very anxious about medical procedures.

I have a gluten-free diet now. Most of the time I don't regard it as restrictive because I've got used to it. It can be restrictive when eating out, but I try and read menus online beforehand and I know the questions I need to ask. I've also developed a mental list of safe places and reliable chains I can fall back on. I do get odd looks if I nip into McD's on the way to the pub and end up sitting with a drink eating a Big Mac without the bun with a plastic knife and fork.

Speak to the doctor that's doing the gastroscopy before you take the sedation about possibly looking for coeliac disease and taking biopsy samples. It's almost certainly not the doctor you'll have been speaking to. If it's not been request, it's unlikely it will get done. If the plan was just to have a look at your stomach, the bit they need to biopsy for CD is just beyond that.

@nala15 - so how did it go?

nala15 · 23/12/2019 15:09

It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Sedation helped a lot!
They took three biopsies and will be having a follow up with the results.
My stomach is inflamed as well as my oesophagus so they have told me to carry on with omeprazole!
Thanks for the help and advice! Glad I went for sedation like you suggested.
