Wheezing after milk in three year old

My dd1 loves drinking milk. We recently moved house and town and since then she has not been sleeping though the night. She will usually wake once but if given some milk, she will generally go straight back to sleep. A bad habit I know!!
However, just recently she has been really wheezy and coughs for up to an hour after this milk. I haven't noticed it during the day with milk but noticed she coughed a bit when having an ice cream the other day. I am now wondering if she has an intolerance which is causing this. Has anyone any experience or advice on this?

DS's asthma was worse when he was having dairy, but much of the wheezing/stuffy nose disapeared a couple of weeks after removing it from the diet.

It is difficult to know, but if she is getting wheezy, an appointment with the doctor is a good idea.

try goats milk, its got a good reputation for being better for asthama and eczema sufferers.

Thanks for that. It has been a very recent development, but yes I think I will make a doctor's appointment tomorrow.

How does goat's milk taste - will she notice???

Also, do you think that this type of allergy can effect mood?

It has a slightly stronger taste. But you can start by mixing one part of goats milk to nine of cows milk and increase the amount little by little if she is very sensitive to flavour changes.

Regarding mood changes, it is difficult to know as there could be an infinite number of things that make her be a bit cranky.

goats milk is delicious - sweet and creamy! we often drink it and its lovely on cereal.

possibly the house move affecting her mood? Even young children notice the changes!

Might be more/ different pollen/ dust in the air now and that can make you more susceptible to other allergens.

my sons intolerances affect him hugely - and mood swings are def symptom!!

BTW, it may be something environmental too. We realised the previous owner of our last house had a cat when an allergic friend came to visit and developed an asthma attack. Problems stopped when we got rid of the carpet.

She had no cow's milk yesterday or last night but still woke up and coughed alot in the night, even after water and benylin. Again she sounded really wheezy.

She hasn't been coughing during the day... I suppose always worse when lying down.

I think that she may have a bit of a bug so it may be that the milk has been making her more stuffy. I will make an appointment today.

The house was really dusty when we moved in, making my DH really sneezy as he is prone to allergies.

Umm, when DS's asthma is getting out of control he coughs a lot and wheezes at night.

There are simple things that help him (apart of upping the dose of his medicines):

  1. Wash his bedding every week at 60 degrees.

  2. If it sunny take her pillow and duvet out and leave them under the sun for a couple of hours (this kills the mites present in every house)

  3. Having a mite proof mattress protector that also gets washed weekly (although lately, we have found out that having his mattress in the original plastic it came in+a towel beach/washable blanket + bed sheet is more manageable for us to sort. Get a mite proof pillow cover. This is soo esential for us that we take one with us on every single trip.

  4. Get rid of the carpet or make yourself vaccuum clean at least every 3 days. Check there are not humidity patches or mould in any part of the room (spores are always bad news)

  5. If she has a comforter wash it frequently or pop it in the freezer for a few hours once or twice month (again, to kill the mites).

It looks like a lot of things to do, but once you are used to them you almost forget you are doing them.

Regarding mood changes, food may be to blame but I would consider every other aspect that may be causing it before having firm suspictions on her food. It may also be that with all the coughing and wheezing she is not resting at night as much as she should.

I took her to the doctor this morning and have been given some syrup - alupent syrup, which the dr says is used for treating asthma. She suggests to give it just at bedtime. She didn't think that it is asthma as no exzcema, but maybe just bordering on it. Her chest sounded clear.

Thanks for all the tips, I will definately try and stick to those!!!

As for the milk connection, Dr suggests cutting down on cow's milk rather than totally avoiding it.

As for the mood changes, in general she is pretty good, I think that she has been missing out on sleep so basically a bit knackered. She doesn't want to walk too far etc. which isn't like her. So hopefully the syrup at bedtime will help her sleep!

Shall let you know how she goes...
