cold urticaria?

My 2.3ds has been diagnosed with cold urticaria, although when i say diagnosed the doc said, it probably is this and not to worry.
Im a little confused as he is getting this whenjust sat in his pjs, shorts and tshirt type on his arms and legs and face, now i know these areas are exposed but its not exactly cold!!, do es anyone have any experience of this? or anything like this, it just looks like hives or so im told.

well the doctor says its triggered by the cold, ie if he puts his hands in cold water, which he does and the rash does come up but now he seems to be getting it every day.

I dont think its washing powder or anything like that as ive not changed anything and it seems to be the uncovered parts of his body that are mostly affected and seem to come up when he has been up for about half an hour so not eaten or drank anything.

Its getting to the point where if i take him out with it people are looking at me like bad mummy as they think i am taking him shopping with chicken pox or something lol. also doctor told me not to give him the piriton unless the rash is bothering him so expects me to leave him with it all day everyday sob!

yes i think im going to if it carries on for much longer, as at the moment the doctor just seems to brush it off as no big thing

I used to get it.

If I got hot or cold I would get 'nettlerash' on my body but it really is no big deal.

I am not supposed to take aspirin as this triggers it.

I put aqueous cream on it to cool it down

Many moons ago DH ended up at A&E as everytime he left his house he came up in a rash which spread until it was joined up. He was told it was temperature-sensitive urticaria. Interestingly, since then he has become increasingly sensitive to all sorts of things like insect bites and he now has hayfever which has worsened annually.

My ds(8)is allergic to cold, heat & pressure amongst other allergies, including being anaphylactic to peanuts. when he had his first cold reaction which his gp said was cold urticaria, he did not actually have the urticaria rash. His ears were swallon 3 times the size they usually are & his hands & his cheeks just extreemly red with slight hive rash. He gets this nearly every winter but it is usually only from being in the cold weather not cool bath etc but not all the time, as it depends on the level of histamine in the body at that time or on that particular day as to whether you get a reaction. In the summer he also has heat urticaria & he does usually get the urticaria rash all over & swallon cheeks too. He has also had reactions form pressure & the same thing happens with an urtiacria rash sometimes. I wonder why when my ds has an reaction to the cold he does not often get the urticarial rash but usually only ears, hands or feet swell!

I alwasy give antihistamine when such reaction occurs. I would try to get him refered. ALso mummytoplusbump:try not to worry abot what people think. I know that is easier said then done sometimes but you know the reason & you do not have toexplain yourself to anyone. I remeber when we was on hoilday (in th uk) last year. My ds had a reaction to the heat(hot weathre) & all week he was covered in rash & his face(cheeks) were so swallon, eyes puffy & a slight hive rash on his cheeks. We got some funny looks & comments as if we should not have let him out as people may catch what ever he had. We gave him his antihistamine as sujested by the gp & told nothing else could be done. By the end of the week(wen we was due to come home) it went down! Poor thing.

I have this - I had a bad phase about 3-4 years ago where I got it on a daily basis even if I wasn't particularly cold but now I only seem to get it on very very cold daysif I am outside for a long time.
It used to be so bad I couldn't walk down the freezer aisle in Sainsbury's without it being triggered.

I was referred to a specialist at Guys & St Thomas' who told me it would just vanish one day as quickly as it came.
The only thing I was told to be careful of was if for any reason I had to be put under anaesthetic (sp?) as the sudden cold could potentially cause problems.

Thanks for all your advice, hes getting this every day now and its quite warm, i think i will take him back to the doctors and get him refered and see if there is anything that can be done, as hes very grumpy when it happens too

Hope you find out exactly what is the cause(if is cold urticaria)( & that it soon starts to get better. Mummyto!plusbump. My ds went through a stage where he had it alot & gradually it is less & less now. Good liuck. Julia
