CMPI (Cows milk protein intolerance)

Hi all, I could really do with some advice about my just turned 2 year old daughter. When we first introduced cows milk at 12 months she used to get very offensive diarrhoea, we realised it stopped when we bought UHT and she had no other symptoms. At around 18 months old my husband bought fresh whole milk as there was no UHT available and my daughter didn't get diarrhoea, wind etc so we thought she'd grown out of it but within 2 weeks she had an outbreak of eczema (which she'd never had before) so we put her back on UHT but the eczema never really resolved but it did improve. We have noticed on one occasion she had very swollen eyes but we couldn't pin point the cause.
In the last couple of weeks her eczema has worsened again, I have spoken to nursery who confirmed they use fresh whole milk in breakfast and if the have a non cereal breakfast they give them milk to drink (she's been at nursery for 12 months). Within the last 2 weeks her symptoms have have flared up, she seems to have hives and her eczema has worsened. I'm not sure if it's the UHT we're buying or her intolerance is worsening. We normally buy aldi sterilsed milk, which I have heard further alters the protein to that of UHT. We recently bought Tesco UHT and we're not sure if that exacerbated the symptoms and we're now on Asda's UHT.
What i would like to know is

  1. Does anyone have any experience with the differences of UHT and sterilsed milk?
  2. Should I eliminate cows milk altogether and put her on an alternative? If so what is best? (She has a glass when she wakes up and goes to bed).
  3. Is it possible her intolerance is worsening? (I know that it wont/shouldn't develop into an allergy).

I have also noticed she often has a very rounded stomach, similar to that of a malnourished child you see on TV, shes not malnourished. Could this be bloating caused by milk or is this normal for a 2year old?

Thanks in advance x

Hi, my daughter is younger than yours but I plan to put her on goats milk when she is a year old as she is very allergic to cow's milk. I have a first cousin who is 12 now who has been on goats milks since he was 13 months. Even now if he has cow's milk he will break out in eczema within a day or two. Once or twice a year he will suffer the eczema to have a bowl of Coco pops with cow's milk, bless him. He has no problem at all with goats milk and he got used to the taste very quickly. I know where I am you can get a great range of goats milk yoghurts etc. Might be worth a try?

I would have a word with her nursery about giving her milk, they should be well able to accommodate intolarences like that. My DD will be going to creche full-time next month and they have assured me that they can make all her meals milk free.
