Negative skin prick test but....

My youngest DS (7 months) recently has skin prick tests at an allergy clinic. All came back negative and we were advised by the allergist that what he has are intolerances to food rather than allergies.

He advised me to give him peanuts despite him reacting to them through bm. He also told me to try an edited version of the egg ladder despite him also reacting through bm.
Dairy and soy we've been told to avoid until he's older then try the different ladders.

So we started with something with egg that was baked into it. I made him some fish fingers. So fish coated in flour, dipped in egg and coated in cornflakes (it's hard to find a soy free bread that would have worked for breadcrumbs). As soon as he's eaten them he's come up in red marks all around his face.

I'm so confused now. How can his skin prick tests have came back negative but he's had this reaction and where do I go from here?

If it's not life threatening or life limiting, follow the advice you've been given. I would guess that repeated exposure will reduce the reaction, so keep trying the same thing until the reaction isn't there any more - it won't disappear overnight.

You need to read up on igA igG and igE reactions to understand what is going on

My daughter reacted to a lot of foods when young (not true allergies though, had the prick test). She grew out of most eventually

I think it sounds like non-ige and he's failed the egg test on the first go.

Have they referred you to a Paediatric Dietician?

Yes he has a dietician appointment in May.

I was just confused about the way the rash presented. In the past his skin reactions have just been eczema flare ups. I thought a rash around his mouth was something different.

His reflux has been really bad and he's having mucousy nappies again so I guess I'll just put it down as a fail and try again in 6 months. Oddly enough his eczema hasn't flared up at all.

Eczema isn't necessarily a sign if you're non-ige. I'm non-ige to cow's milk protein and rarely get eczema.
