I'm having a birthday party for DD and one of my friends kids is coeliac. I was going to buy a separate cake but then thought why not make DD's birthday cake using gluten free ingredients, however I wondered if there are any really good recipes out there? I'm just wanting a basic sponge/plain cake that I can ice with butter cream. TIA

Cakes are the one thing where gf doesn't really make a difference.
Just buy a standard gf flour. If plain rather than self raising make sure you buy gf baking soda to go with it.
I then just do a Victoria sponge all in one recipe and cook as normal.

How did it turn out Bettle? Smile

I agree- I'm coeliac and we use Asda gf flour in a traditional Victoria sponge recipe. It's delicious

Thanks for the advice, I wasn't sure if GF worked the same way as normal flour. I'll let you know how it goes, baking it on Sat for the party on Sunday.

My favourite recipe is the Doves Farm Hot chocolate cake it is better than I remember any gluten containing chocolate cake.
I also love the all recipes lemon and elderflower gluten free cake. These two are my staples.
I would dearly love to find a good lemon drizzle and a good banana bread.

Oh, nigellas brownie recipe (but leave it in a cake shape and don't cut it up.) It isn't labelled GF, but it is. And it's amazing....

I make this once a week and it's pretty much failsafe (although I occasionally add a splash of milk if it's a bit thick to mix). I also add a buttercream filling.

If you don't fancy risking it Asda do a GF birthday cake girl less than a tenner and it's perfectly acceptable.

Hopefully it'll taste ok! I didn't make the topper - I'm not that clever but thankfully someone on Etsy is!

That looks stunning! Do check though (as a relative if a coeliac!) if the hundreds and thousands on the cake are gf as they often also contain wheat/gluten!

Beetlebum1981 · 10/03/2019 21:49

Arghhh, just checked and they contain sodding wheat starch. It never occurred to me, I thought they were just pure sugar. I've let friend know, just hope her DD isn't too bad ☹️

Rubbish! Hope your DD has a lovely party though Smile

Eek, I am coeliac and have cheerfully eaten thousands of hundreds and thousands! Whoops! (I don’t get immediate reaction to contamination, it’s w cumulative thing)

Beetlebum1981 · 11/03/2019 21:28

Friend was really lovely and said that whilst they obviously are super strict 99% of the time they know that at things like parties she may get glutened. Hopefully they shouldn't cause too bad a reaction 🤞
