Similac alimentum

Daughter (10weeks old) has been put onto similac alimentum for the second time (first time was at about 5wks old but she refused to drink it). She has been constipated since day one, and been on cosmocol since about 6weeks old.

They diagnosed reflux around the same time as finally agreeing she was constipated but said she could be refluxing because her belly was so full where she wasn't pooping.

Got rantidine prescribed at her 8 weeks check, and was told to continue with the cosmocol and we would be referred to a paediatrician.

Paediatrician is adamant she has a Cows Milk Protein Allergy and disregarded me saying my LG doesn't like the milk and it worsens her symptoms and insisted I try it for a minimum of 6 weeks.

She took 10oz of milk the first day as oppose to her usual 25-30oz. And we have slowly been building it up for the last 5 days, she's up to about 20oz per 24hr period, but the reflux is 10 times worse, with sick now sometimes rather than just saliva, and she pooped for the first time yesterday since getting it prescribed 4 days ago.

She has constant wind, and screams until she farts it all out. And now doesn't settle through the night unless she is asleep on me, she has always slept in a cot/Moses basket.

The cosmocol has stopped working. The ranitidine seems to be ineffective and the milk is the only thing to have changed. It's supposed to be making her better not worse.

Is this normal? What do I do? Keep going like the paediatrician said or go with my gut and beg to try something else...

I’m not sure whether it’s ‘normal’ but my DS was and still is on that milk and we never had that many problems with it. The smell is extraordinarily bad but once he’d gotten used to the taste, he took to it quite well. I wasn’t convinced about the CMPA either but the similac didn’t seem to worsen anything for DS either.

Have you moved over from regular formula or breastmilk?

I’m really sorry, I don’t have much advice. I know the feeling of panic though!

We moved from regular formula to similac

I feel that the similac shouldn't worsen symptoms, even if it doesn't make them better. This is why I'm questioning CMPA at all.

I’m not sure that it should ever worsen them. I’d definitely request neocate or one of the other brands of dairy free formula if they’re so insistent that it’s CMPA.

Did you try moving gradually, oz by oz?

Must be so hard for you and baby, to have no relief from the symptoms!

Yes we tried it by oz this time round, we also tried a bit of vanilla essence to disguise the taste (as advised by our health visitor)

She is taking similac now, on its own, albeit in small amounts and not anywhere near her usual daily amount.

Just getting worse symptoms.

If I were you, I’d go back and ask for something else.

It’s supposed to help, not make it worse!

I know this may be old. But my LO is also on similac from today - due to his eczema. It took 4/5 visits back and forth to the GP for them to change the formula. Has anyone else used Similac for eczema related? Would love to know the pros and cons.

I know this is really old post, but please could you tell how your LO was with Similac? My 7 months old DD was put on it from today as doctors said has CMPA as corticosteroids didn't help to treat her eczema (in my mind it also explains now her really bad reflux and horrible sleep since she was tiny). Thank you
