Egg allergy - is it safe to handle chicks?

DS's class are hatching some chicks this week. Once the chicks are about a week old the children may be allowed to handle them. DS is allergic to eggs. Does anybody know whether it will be safe for DS to touch the chicks at that stage, or could they still be "eggy"?

Thanks

My ds is also allergic to eggs and has handled chicks. He was okay. Not sure on your ds - could he wear disposable gloves and wash hands well afterwards? Can you be there to supervise?
