Prick test for allergies in babies

Hi, my lo is dairy intolerant and on neocate and we’ve just started weaning. She’s been having baby porridge mixed with water to start and since I’ve been giving it the symptoms she had before going on neocate have returned, rash, runny nose, windy etc. Has anyone had a skin prick test done on their lo through the gp to see what they’re intolerant to?

Skin prick tests are for allergies not intolerances. Both my DC had skin prick testing at 6 months old. We were referred through our GP to the allergy clinic.

Intolerances and allergies are classed as the same in children. I think generally skin prick testing is done through the paediatrician/dietician at the hospital. Do you have someone you can contact? Otherwise go through the GP but don't be surprised if you wait a while. Good luck Smile

Yes, the only way to manage intolerances is by observation of symptoms. The skin prick tests will show allergies but not intolerances.

Thank you all, I’m still waiting for a referral to see the dietitian at the hospital, but will speak to the gp to see if they can refer for a prick test. I’ll just carry on with eliminating foods for now!

What's in the baby porridge? Some have milk added

All that’s in this one is wholegrain oat flour and thiamin, it’s by Holle!

Could be the oats. Have you tried a rice based one? Or just simple fruits/veg?

Yes that’s my next step now, will be making a purée today and trying that for a few days to see if there’s any reaction. Feel so sorry for her as she’s quite unsettled again.
