Baby milk advice

Courtneyt6898 · 21/03/2018 11:35

Please help! This is my first baby. He has been on cow and gate 1st milk, this wasn’t satisfying him so was advised to use hungrier baby milk. This made him constipated. The midwife suggest cow and gate comfort milk which made his poos really runny and very frequent so was advised to put him back on 1st stage. Again this has made him constipated, I’ve gave him comfort milk during the night to help settle his stomach and to make him poo but he has only been going 1hour and wants a 5pz bottle every time. Any suggestions?

What I learnt is to stick with one milk and it can take two weeks to take effect. I used Hipp Organic after recommendations on here and improved constipation/wind dramatically with Dr Brown's bottles. How old is your baby? Mine had a phase of 5oz every 2 hours but suddenly changed to 7oz every 3-4 hours.

He’s only 3 weeks old! He’s bringing his wind up perfect, the cow and gate milk just seems to be making him constipated and the comfort milk isn’t satisfying him. I wasn’t sure whether to change to SMA and see how he gets on with that?

What is his weight/weight gain like?

Maybe try bigger bottles? I would stick to just one type of milk for a few days/week. We didn't get on with the comfort milk either. How do you know he is constipated? How often is he pooing?

WanderlustHenpeck · 21/03/2018 11:59

There won't be any difference in how satisfied he is with different types of milk, I wouldn't think. They are all the same calorie wise. Perhaps it's something else?

His weight gain is fine at the minute. He’s due to be weighed again tomorrow. He was straining really bad and constantly crying, lifting his legs up. I used cotton wool and cool boiled water and had to help him poo by wiping his bum. I just wasn’t sure whether to change his milk brand as he’s had Cow and gate since being born and has either made him constipated or poo 5 times in 30mins. I took him to the doctors and they said there’s no much they can do because of his age? I don’t want to upset his tummy even more, I want him to be able to be satisfied and to be able to go toilet himself?

Okay, I’m not sure what it could be. He’s been on cow and gate since birth, at first he was fine with it. He was going 3-4 hours but recently he’s been having all his bottle then only sleeping for an hour or so before wanting another 5oz? Just so stuck with what to do as I don’t want to upset his tummy!

I think cow and gate and sma are basically the same as made by same company? Cow and gate made mine very constipated, horrible to see. We are at 5 months now and been fine ever since changed to Hipp.

Bananarama12 · 21/03/2018 12:08

Is he wanting a bottle for comfort or is he drinking to whole bottle? If for comfort you could try a dummy.

Courtneyt6898 · 21/03/2018 12:08

It is so horrible, especially because there’s not much you can do for them! I am considering changing his brand but wasn’t sure if it wouldn’t upset his tummy even more!! Would it b Wise to change now while he’s in the process of his milk being changed or? I’m just so stuck!

He’s drinking the whole bottle! He already has a dummy

Personally I'd stick with the stage 1 milk for the moment. It's possible he has an allergy which is making him uncomfortable and causing the poo issues, but if it is an allergy then changing to comfort milk won't fix that.

How long has it been since he's only been going an hour? I seem to remember that a big growth spurt happens around 3 weeks?

My son is 12 weeks now and he's a total milk monster. He has been having 6 oz bottles every 3 hours for quite some time now! I checked with the HV and she said it was fine to just feed him as much as he wanted, so I have done! He fluctuates a lot. Some days he won't finish his bottles and other days he guzzles them and can barely go 1.5hours between feeds.

His overall weight will have an impact on how much milk he needs, but if he's gaining steadily then I'd just feed him as much as he wants as often as he wants. If it seems like a ridiculous amount, take him to get weighed frequently and check he's not suddenly ballooning :)

FWIW New babies often have sore tummies, and I don't think it always means they are constipated even though they sometimes appear to be. I think it's just their little digestive system getting used to things!

Does he cry a lot or is he generally fairly settled? Does he take a dummy?

WanderlustHenpeck · 21/03/2018 12:15

FYI we also use Hipp and it's been great for us. Worth a try!

Courtneyt6898 · 21/03/2018 12:19

THank you! He’s not usually a cry baby. But recently he’s very unsettled, very clingy! He takes a dummy fine, but again he will have huge crying fits as if he’s in pain, lifting his legs etc. I’ve had to make him poo a few times with water and cotton wool, rubbing his belly seems to help too. Do you think it would be wise to put him on a different brand 1st stage and leave him on it for a couple of weeks to see how he gets on?

Any milk change will upset him for a few days. If you make a change, do it and stick to it for at least 3 days preferably 5 before you decide if its helping or not

Courtneyt6898 · 21/03/2018 12:36

Okay, that’s perfect. Thank you!
