my boyfriend is allergic to onions, gets horrendous reflux so bad he can barely breathe.

Anyone know any good recipes without onions? Or ingredients that make a substitute?
TIA

Is he allergic to all the "onion family" or just to some of them?

Ulysees · 22/04/2007 20:25

Hi chandra, he can have garlic but I don't know about leeks etc.. I don't think he dare rist them? I thought it strange that he's ok with garlic but there must be something in onions that affects him.

I thought about leeks but if he is so sensitive they are better avoided.

Wondering about other substitues... not sure really. We use onions to provide a slightly sweet side to food that may be emulated by adding a bit of sugar (obvioulsy is not the same but it is a bit of help), although, perhaps for savoury dishes it would be better to leave chicken cubes, bouillon, etc. do the job?

thanks chandra. I think I'll have a look in the health shop today to see what they have? We're on holiday for most of his stay so at least I can just let him worry about it It's if he decides to stay on here and I have to cook regularly that I'm thinking of. Although he can cook so you never know I may just have to wash up

I'm sorry I can not be of much help, so far DS is ok with onions, I don't know what I would do without them.

thanks kerry, yes he's ok with garlic which is strange to me? Still it makes cooking a little easier. Going to be fun picking restaurants on holiday (or vacation as he says) Just have to stress NO onions!!!
