allergic to my wedding ring

vivie · 17/07/2004 17:12

Since I've been pregnant I've been getting itchy dermatitis where I wear my wedding ring. I've never had dermatitis before and I'm pretty upset about it. It's just a plain gold band with no stones or anything fancy, and I've not had it cleaned or anything. Am I likely to get over it when my baby is born?
Ds has eczema, food allergies and asthma - does this mean my unborn babe is going to have these problems too?

Ooooooh MiT - how annoying for you - have no pearls of wisdom I'm afraid, but didnt want to ignore your post. I wouldn't do anything drastic with your rings just yet though as if I recall correctly, you want to try for another baby soonish (?) so your finger size may well change again! Hope someone has some experience of this for you.

My feet are a size bigger than they were before I was pg with my 1st ds and they haven't shrunk back. I've had to get rid of a pair of very nice running shoes! My fingers swelled too but they went back to normal within a week or two of ds being born. Can't wear any rings now though!

i had this when preg with ds2. he is 5 months old now and i am fine now. try eurax cream on it. i did and it helped a lot

CookieMonster · 17/07/2004 17:17

hi lonelymumof3, is Eurax cream available over the counter? It's very strange but I haven't been able to wear any rings on that finger for about a month - it just suddenly starting itching and went red and swollen. If I go without my rings for a few days, it calms down again. I'm not pregnant and haven't been for a long time so I've no idea what it is!

lonelymumof3 · 17/07/2004 17:19

yes it is cookie.

lonelymumof3 · 17/07/2004 17:21

also, i soak my rings in a solution of antibacterial handwash every so often. Sounds daft I know but it works for me!!!

SofiaAmes · 17/07/2004 18:45

I got too fat and swollen for my wedding ring when I was pregnant and had to take it off most of the time. You could wear it on a chain around your neck. I'm sure that it will get better after you have the baby. I had all sorts of allergies, dermatitis, aggravated asthma, itchy scalp etc. etc. that all disappeared within days and weeks of giving birth.

I found Nelsons Calendula Cream was very good. From Holland and Barretts.

happymummy1 · 17/07/2004 19:13

Hi vivie this also happened to me,i was married for over a year then found out i was pregnant and it started,i never had this problem before.I have just started to wear my rings again and my ds is 12wks old,but it does still get sore and itchy every now and then,it may have something to do with hormone changes.

honeybunny · 17/07/2004 22:03

My eczema/dermatitis gets worse if I use any antibacterial products- washing up liquid or handwash etc. A friendly jeweller recommended boiling my rings in a mild solution of fairy washin up liquid on the hob. It does an amazing cleaning job on my eternity wedding ring and does stop the problem for a while until the muck builds up again. Its definitely worse when I'm pregnant, my skin becomes really sensitive. This time its intolerance of my lovely Eve Lom skin products and itchy flakey patches on my eye lids and around my mouth. Yuk. And I cant wear my watch at all. Ever. V V annoying.

vivie · 18/07/2004 00:50

thanks everyone, I'll look out the calendula or eurax cream and hope it sorts itself out when my baby arrives. Strange things really do happen when you're pregnant! Maybe dh will have to buy me a platinum eternity ring

edam · 18/07/2004 00:57

Don't tell your dh but I had a problem with my platinum eternity ring... gold wedding and engagement rings fine, eternity ring made my finger really sore. Had to stop wearing it . Now at the jewellers as it was a bit tight as well and hoping going up a size will help... but it's not just rubbing because it's a bit tight, it is causing a reaction. Tell your dh to get modern platinum, 950 grade; mine's antique and apparently that's 900 grade so maybe that's the problem.

whizzz · 18/07/2004 11:44

Mine did this with certain washing up liquids - it may not be the actual ring thats causing the problem, but soap or whatever getting behind it. When you've been in water & then dry our hands - often the area behind your rings doesn't get dried properly. I changed washing up liquids & always wear rubber gloves- worked a treat.

Paint the inside with clear nail varnish. It will protect your skin from the metal.

mummyintexas · 18/07/2004 17:45

Sorry to hijack this thread a bit, but I have a question on the same topic.....

When I was pg with dd I had to stop wearing my wedding band and eternity band as I got too fat (I ended up gaining a total of about 40lb)... However I've nearly lost all the weight but I still can't fit my rings on (and it's making me as I love them!). Likewise my feet have grown and not gone back to their pre-pg size but that's a whole other topic.

Will my fingers always be larger now or might they go back....I don't want to get my ring re-set (as it'll cost hundreds) only to find that it needs altering again in a year or so.

Hopeing someone has a pearl of wisdom.....

Aero · 18/07/2004 17:45

I also get this from time to time - funny enough, it started itching last night for the first time in ages!! I just remove the rings for a few days usually and it calms down. the last time though, it was pretty bad and my BIL, who's a pharmasist, gave me a coulpe of creams to apply - one was mild hydrocortisone, the other anti-fungal. Wasn't pregnant at the time and it did the trick in about two days.

mummyintexas · 19/07/2004 00:01

bump - sorry!
Does anyone have any words of encouragement about losing finger weight??!!

mit · 20/07/2004 01:22

Hi Aero, Twiglett & Vivie
I was just checking old threads...thank you for your advice. The dates are a bit funny and it's out of sync so I'm not sure when you replied - but thank you!
I think I'll get it re-sized, hopefully as you said Twiglett they can just file down the inside of the band so not have to reset all the stones. If we have another baby I'll have to re-think it.....but I don't want to not wear it for another 2 years.....seems like a waste of pretty diamonds!
Thanks for the advice ladies, mit x

I have just had this same reaction! Never had it before - did you manage to get yours sorted in the end?
