Reintroducing Lactose

My little girl was diagnosed as being lactose intolerant a couple of months ago after she had a tummy bug.
We tried introducing lactose after a month as the doctor told us to and her symptoms returned - watery, mucusy poo that smelt vile! So we left her a while longer.
This week we have started to introduce lactose again (a friend recommended the milk ladder) she's had 1/2 a malted milk the last few days.
Her poo has been looser again, but no mucus and not watery. Is this progress? Should we continue and will it improve in consistency?
When she is dairy free she has solid, fully formed poo.
