Neocate advice

My 5 week old started neocate Wednesday afternoon as he has CMPA and aptamil pepti didn't work. Yesterday he drank 700ml over 24 hrs in small amounts sometimes up to 90ml but other times less. Today is is just crying every time I try to feed him and he is so hungry and unhappy. His rash is back all over his face and I'm worried.
I'm assuming I just keep persisting with the neocate but it's awful seeing him so unhappy after such a good day yesterday.

What bottles are you using?

When we were put on Neocate our consultant asked us to use dr browns bottles as and they made a real difference

Neocate is much thinner than normal milks so the change can be hard for baby.

All of my guys have needed the have gaviscon as a thickener for it.
My middle also couldn't use tommee tippee bottles with them and needed a flatter teat (nuk and mam worked best) for the neocate when he'd been ok with other bottles previously.

Also, baby is now having digestible food so the gut is getting used to all this new sensations and feelings so might get a bit constipated for a day or so whilst the stomach and bowels work out what to do

Also, it took a good week for my youngest to lose the bad rash (plus all sorts of creams)

We are using the dr browns bottles

The problem I think is his tummy hurts or something when the milk goes down. It's like he is starving hungry and initially takes the milk then starts screaming! I hope it gets better soon... I'm losing the will to live!!

The taste is awful but babies usually adjust and he will get used to it. As I'm sure you know, it is "elemental" as in needs no digestion, can just be absorbed and is used for babies with severe allergy problems. So it is hard to see how his tummy hurts - unless he has reflux which you would know. My baby had double strength neocate to help weight gain and so it was thicker, but gaviscon sounds like it might be worth a try to thicken it. Hope it gets better!

Is the baby guzzling the bottles and getting a lot of wind? Does he/she settle when upright? Any vomiting? You can get reflux and cmpa together so that could be worth keeping in mind. Also, that sounds like a lot of milk (I might be wrong tho) could you try cutting back a bit? Maybe he is overful and uncomfortable? Just an idea. Hope all settles down soon.

Like another previous poster said the taste of Neocate is vile and takes babies some time for them to adjust.
Maybe he has some reflux as well which is causing his discomfort? DD ended up on Neocate but with carobel to make the feed thicker and omeprazole after ranitidine failed to work.
Is your son under a paediatrician? If he is still in discomfort in a few more days I would explain you son's symptoms to them.
I think it can take awhile for the milk to leave their systems which could explain the rash but please get it checked out if you are still concerned. Good luck and keep going. It will get easier I promise.
I hope your DS gets better soon
