Do coconuts count as nuts for allergy purposes?

Silly question probably but thought I'd ask! DD2 (11 months) is allergic to egg and dairy and the allergy clinic at hospital have advised us to avoid nuts as well until she tested at 2 years old. So do I need to avoid coconut too? I'm thinking of making a nice coconut rice pudding with soy milk as DD2 has been poorly and not eating well and is dropping through the centiles so I need something full of calories.

Thanks, Jenny

GOOD QUESTION, I THINK A LOT OF THINGS SAY ITS NOT A NUT AND YET WHEN I ASKED OUR ALLERGY NURSE THAT SAME QUESTION SHE TOLD ME TO AVOID IT. SINCE THEN I OFTEN WORRY INCASE SHE SAID THAT BECAUSE SHE DIDNT KNOW HERSELF. ALSO ITS FINDING COCONUT THAT HASNT BE CONTAMINATED BY NUTS THEMSELVES. SORRY BABBLING NOW AS NOT SURE MYSELF. WILL KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR REPLIES!!PRETTY SURE MY MUMS READ THAT GREAT ORMAND STREET HOS DOESNT RECKON YOU NEED TO AVOID IT? I WILL HAVE TO LOOK ON THE WEB.

Yes, they are classed as nuts I think. I didn't know and gave dd cocnut milk at 6 months. Fortunately no reaction

Coconuts aren't counted as nuts for allergy purposes. Legally there does not need to be a warning on products containing coconut as the protein is different to nut protein so does not trigger the nut allergy.

It isn't beyond the realms of possibility that someone could be allergic to coconut but the risks are no greater than they are for almost all foods.

Thanks, I think I'll give it go based on that - I know you have to be careful as some coconut products also have milk in for some reason (anyone else find that milk turns up everywhere, even in really random foods?)

I have a child who is allergic to peanut as you can get and also allergic to most tree nuts and pine nut. They are fine with coconut. Very rarely it can cause allergy but I think any true allergy consultant would tell you to try it - very carefully the second time.

I'm a bit late on this, but ds2 is allergic ot peanut and on the same screen, they counted several other types of nuts AND coconut mixture. He came back as grade 3 to everything in that category.
