Cake for school

I want to take a cake to my daughter's class and after school club and we were told they couldn't have nuts. I thought, fine, went to Sainsbury's and bought their Traybakes after reading the ingredient lists and not seeing any nuts in bold...

When we got home I spot this line in the ingredients lists:

"Not suitable for customers with an allergy to nuts due to manufacturing methods"

My question - will the teachers allow the cake? Do I have to take it back to Sainsbury's for a refund? There are no nuts in any of the ingredients

They are the Chocolate Tray Bake and the Sweetie Tray Bake

My plan is to show a photo of the ingredients statement to the after school club lady today - not sure i will have the chance to show it to the teacher.

Birthday isn't until the end of the week so it will be hard, but i might have time to go to sainsbury's to try and exchange...

This is a 5th birthday - so Reception year

If it's not suitable for nut allergy suffered then it would be allowed if a child in the class has a nut allergy.

I showed the ingredients listings to the After School Club lady yesterday and she said ok...

Regarding the classroom one I will return them and get something smaller and snackier rather than cake... Easier for the teacher to hand out...

The child with the nut allergy won't be able to eat it.

i am willing to abide, just wish shops and supermarkets were clearer in their labelling

either say not suitable or don't...

The labelling is a nightmare. I've often bought stuff having read the ingredients, then seen the 'small print' after. It's so annoying!

I went to Sainsbury's yesterday and got the Free From Chocolate Traybake after returning the normal cakes

It's Wheat-, gluten-, milk- and nut-free

I'm not sure I like the ingredients (rapeseed oil, margarine, palm oil) but as I don't know if there is a child in the actual classroom with allergies, I don't want to cause issues...

So my plan for next year is then to ask the teacher if there is a child in class with allergies and get a similar cake or if not, get the ones with the arse covering disclaimer...

@babybarrister not a problem at all, I know the rules are there for a reason, but indeed the arse covering going on is annoying and a bit 'boy who cried wolf' as we end up not knowing what to believe

i will gladly not buy a cake containing nuts but when even a lemon drizzle or a victoria sponge or plain shortbread biscuits have the disclaimer you wonder what to believe...

Could you not make one? Then you'll know for sure that there's no nuts involved.

I work full time and don't get home until 6pm... and the 2yo is still not sleeping grumble yawn grumble so I go to sleep early, no time!

All sorted now...

And a final update

All cakes were a hit and some kids even wanted Seconds of the Free From one but the teachers didn't give seconds (probably wanted to eat the rest in the staff room... there were 27 kids and i cut 33 pieces)

That's great! My DS has allergies and is so, so happy and excited when he an eat cake with the other kids. You did a very kind thing
