red spotty rash - cows milk allergy?

hi all
not posted before!
i have a 5 wk baby girl and am combining bf and formula for the past 3 wks as milk supply low and not enough for her in the evening. past week she has had red spots all over her face and now has them on her chest. have just been cleaning with water and putting calendula cream on lightly. she went 7 days without a poo..dr said she wasn't constipated and again she is now 4 days without a poo,she passes alot of wind and sometimes it causes her discomfort. does anyone know if this is the result of formula and an allergy to cows milk? have been using cow&gate, but someone recc aptamil today. am confused about the brands, including 'nanny'..any advice much appreciated.

hi shineyb, my ds1 who is now 7 had an allegry to cows milk when he was a baby and had none of these symptoms, infact he was the opposite, have very bad diarohea(??) it can be quite normal for new babies to poo infrequent, if you are concerned then go and see your gp or hv.

have just read as well bf babies have less bowel movements then bottle fed, have a read of this hope it helps

thanks for this corrina. we have our 6 week check up this week so will talk to the dr about it.don't want to keep changing formula's as she needs to settle on something...but her face looks terrible, like a proper spotty teenager!

hi shineyb, interested to know if dr recommended anything as my baby girl 7 wks old and has red spots all over her face. I have been bf and giving 2 formula feeds at night. SMA gold - she became constipated so moved to Aptimel - thats when the spots appeared I think and so moved to Farleys but she was very sick and constipated. Not sure what to do now??

Mine is now 3.5mths old and he's on Aptimal. Not sure whether he's allergic to it as he's got quite bad skin all over (possibly eczema and definitely cradle cap on his head). He was originally on SMA Gold and he was quite constipated. When we moved him over to Aptimal his poo became alot more loose and frequent. Have also heard that bf babies tend to poo less. I've heard Hip Organic formula is quite good but once again it's got lactose so if your baby is allergic to it then it's probably not an option though it does seem to be the better end of formulas given that it's organic. You can get them from most health food shops.

have you allergies in the family to cows milk? asthma anything else.

babies breast fed and formua fed both get spots on their face that uslayy fade a few weeks later.

as for the breastfeeding - how lnong do oyu plan to keep it up (well done) ? but to kee p your supply up nad to get it to a stage where your body knows when you need it, you need to feed often and regularly initially. so if you have a pattern now for feeds from you at certain times, keep to them (if not trying to add another one - thats what encourages your milk

i think thats urban myth re breatfeed babies pooing less - both mine breast feed and pooed regularly esp ds (2)! and he munched and munched.

only time constipation was ap roblem was at weaning onto solids at 6mths, but thats only to be expected -

It's awful when they get 'acne' at such a tender age but I think it is to do with hormones and it def won't last long....a girl I know used breast milk on her DS and it cleared up very quickly but my two cleared it on their own after a week or so.

I wouldn't worry about dairy allergy with just these symptoms but I would second hermykne on her bfing advice. Your supply is still being established and it is normal for babies to get really guzzley in the evenings at her age. So....if you would like to solely bf then try and drop the formula and just keepfeeding. If you are happy to mix feed (I did first time)then the evening is a good time to add a bottle but try to not to increase the formula at this early stage.
