Elimination diet - silly question

Sorry I know this has probably been done to death but I was wondering if anyone could help me.

DS is 15 weeks and has the following symptoms - struggling with wind at night waking him every 1-2 hrs, vomming up most of his feeds, arching, clearly in pain at times and only put on 4oz in 3 weeks.

I explained this to the gp and he told me to cut out dairy to rule in or out a cows milk protein allergy. I am EBF.

I know it's a daft question but I feel really clueless but do I literally just stop drinking milk/eating cheese yoghurt etc? What foods are these things hidden in? Looking at my diet now it includes loads of dairy so just wondering what I'm going to eat???!

He said to eat lots of nuts as they contain calcium or do I need to be taking a supplement?

If his symptoms improve then what do I do? The gp left it almost as try this good luck rather than come back and see me in 3 weeks...

That sounds really tough and difficult for you both, I am not a nutritionist but that might be a good step forward as the GP's tend to know little about a lot of things but do not specifically specialise in anything hence they are General Practitioners :-)

Anyway, I found when I was breast feeding that anytime I got stressed, my DS stomach got totally upset, both ends. So it seemed that I produced stress hormones which in turn gave him a terrible time :-(

Not sure what kind of diet you have if you eat everything or if you are vegetarian etc....sorry I cant be of more help. Wish you luck!

You do have to cut out all dairy from your diet and it's hidden lots of foods, so you need to check labels. It feels like a huge faff initially but you get surprising used to it. Kellymom has some good info

I was advised to cut out soy along with dairy as it's common for babies to have problems with both, which DS does.

Once you have eliminated them completely for 3-4 weeks, you then reintroduce one at a time, slowly and watch for symptoms. Begin with soy first, then dairy.

If symptoms appear. Stop and continue with the elimination diet. We were told to challenge every 3-6 months but you will need to go back to the gp for a referral to the allergy team if there is an allergy.
