Sun cream that doesn't cause hives?

Hi,

For the last 2-3 years I've used Nivea Pure and Sensitive 50+ (the spray) on our atopic ds. This year he's reacted to it a couple of times, once quite badly with hives all over. Does anyone have any suggestions for another one I could try? The docs haven't been helpful or had any suggestions so far. I'm even wondering about just giving him piriton 30 mins before applying the cream to try to stave off a reaction.

The nhs prescribe SunSense for people with various allergies. I use it for dd and ds who are multi-allergic and it's great. Not cheap mind you!

I would switch to another sensitive brand and throw away anything from last year. I find it depends on the additives/active ingredients, and these are constantly changing. DD cannot use anything with cactus in it, for example.

Try Ultrasun. Available in waitrose, m&s and amazon/various online. My DC, me and DH all have hyper sensitive skin and react to the sun, and have excema. Ultrasun is the only one that hasnt caused a rash. Its also a once a day, fully waterproof lotion. I just posted the same on another thread, I assure you I dont work for ultrasun, its genuinely fantastic and tried and tested in our house!

I have always found nivea to be the worst in terms of irritation, I get a rash just looking at that stuff, its highly perfumed and just awful. You need to look for paraben free options

I use the pizbuin spray one and it hasn't effected me yet and I'm allergic to just about everything that touches my skin especially oils. It's very light and it's just like spraying body spray on its invisible and doesn't need rubbing in. Everyone is different but that's my experience, I know if I'm allergic to something as I come out in itchy bumps within minutes of contact.

At the moment we are getting on well with boots soltan kids sensitive.

Boots soltan kids sensitive ultra light lotion is water resistant and 50 SPF + UVB. Dd has many allergies so we went in and chatted to them in boots to ensure no nut oils etc. Which they researched up for us and found it to be ok. They were very helpful and said we could return it if it caused any problem! we have got on very well with it, still using last years so please double check on allergen advise yourself. DD has always suffered atopic eczema, multiple food allergies, pollen, dust and anaphylaxis to peanuts. We have been covering her in it this year and she has coped very well. We do tend to ensure it is showered off as much as possible at the end of the day.
We used to have one prescribed from the doctors until they changed to sunsense on NHS. They unfortunately only prescribed the perfumed one back then (not the unperfumed sunsense sensitive you can buy online). The prescribed perfumed sunsense caused eczema on our DD's face for the first time. But it may be worth checking with your own doctor in case you could get the sensitive one now.
We went for years without any sun cream as DD just could not wear it, even her dermatologist recommended not using any at the time. We just stumbled upon the boots one in desperation prior to a school beach trip.

We use green people organic kids... No complaints and doesn't flare up DS excema

Another vote for Ultrasun. Most sun creams bring DH and me out in acne, especially in high factors, this one doesn't at all. Also doesn't feel greasy.

In my personal experience I found using dry old sprays were a lot better, as the thicker the sun cream the more suffocated your skin gets which causes hives or prickly heat.

Also, calamine lotion is bloody amazing, put it on and leave it over night - best advice I ever received.

Having been hospitalised due to a bad reaction to suncream I am very careful. I use the pizbruin sensitive spray.
DS also reacts to some but for the last few years ahs been using the Lloyds chemist own brand kids stuff which has been fine.

We've had some success with The Sun Mousse (also known as Bergaderm) on DS who reacts spectacularly to most brands of sun cream.

Last year he was ok with the Piz Buin one mentioned up thread, so I confidently bought and applied it at the start of the 'summer' only to have an angry red rash appear in about 20 mins!

Currently trying Lavera Sensitive sun cream and seems ok so far....

I have lots of skin allergies and even the piz buin one doesn't work, but last year I bought the new Garnier Dry Mist and it's fantastic, no more irritating eczema or prickly heat, perfect for my 2 year old as well.
