Red rash around ds's mouth after certain food![shock]

since weaning my nine month old son onto solids, i have noticed that after eating certain food like strawberries and honey he came out in little red spots around his mouth area .today was at its worst and i'm not sure what caused it but the rash was more blotchy and spread out all round his mouth.i was using uncooked egg to make some food and i do remember he touched it, so could it be that?cant think of anything else but am certainly worried about it.does anyone have any idea why this happens and does it get any better?

Does sound like an allergy of some sort best to get checked out by gp.
In meantime keep away from egg as it is a comman allergin.

DD used to get this after eating tomatoes. More blotchy than spots though. Wasn't sore or itchy from what I could gather. She seems to have gorwn out of it.

don't give a baby under 12 months honey

or strawberries for that matter, but especially not honey

My son was allergic to eggs - he was given an antihistamine to keep just in case he had egg - like in cakes at a party or something - he grew out of it by the time he was 15 months and now loves them! Allergies tend to spring up the second time you give them the food not the first time. I would eliminate the things from his diet you gave him - and then re-introduce them to see which one reacts - but be careful - may be really allergic - mention to your doctor before you try it! You can then go to hosp to get allergy tested - eggs are important because they are form part of many vaccinations esp the MMR - my son was given this at hosp the day we went to see if still allergic or not - just to be safe.

My son is also allergic to egg and we discovered it much the same way first exposure rash around the mouth second exposure urticaria all over his body. MMR no longer contains egg as DS has just had his, in a medical centre in the HV office, no crash trolley just a doctor in the building which is standard practce for any vaccinations. DS can tolerate cake, biscuits but I have to avoid "eggy" egg - it's not been a problem and we're hoping he will grow out of it.

do be careful though as my ds had an anaphylatic reaction to a small amount of egg white powder in a potato crouqet(sp) when he was nine months.
At least speak to healh visitor.

My DD would always go blotchy and red around the mouth and on her hands (I guess where she touched the food) with tomatoes and bizarrely, aubergienes.

I didn't stop feeding her tomatoes and now she is fine (age 2).

Another for giving honey. It can contain a particular form of botchalism (sp?) which is VERY dangerous to a baby.

As for the rash, my DD gets one from tomatoes, but paed said to give them anyway as too hard to avoid, and if just a mild red rash then it's not doing her any serious harm.

basically she couldn't even have bits of smoked salmon I picked out of my scrambled egg without the red blotchy rash coming at about 16 months

but when she was 2 she just tried again and was fine

honestly if you're getting a reaction don't give it again for a good 3 months .. then try a little bit

some people say they can have egg in cake but not eggy egg and i was unsure of difference?

Is is a contact allergy - a type of excema.

Do try to eliminate whatever is causing the problem and strawberries, tomatoes and eggs would be chief suspects tbh.

If you don't manage to control it, the resistance of the skin soon wears down and before long it is one awful running open sore - horrific for everyone concerned!

It has taken years to get DS sorted and in the end we only managed it by using a pretty heafty dose of steroid cream, followed by a milder one for 3 months or so.

GPs don't tend to know much about dermatology related complaints, so it is worth asking to be referred to a paed dermatologist or at least seeing whether your PCT has a dermatology nurse attached to it at all.

thankyou for all your coments and advice, as for giving him honey, well you know the know it all mum?! well she has tried only once and i have agreed to not give it again in a hurry.he seems to be ok with strawberries but its the egg im concerned about.he has had egg in certain food and even as scramble for breakfast, but im worried it was the raw egg that did it, as he touched some mixture whist i was preparing a batter!all gone now and it did him no harm or discomfort and i do plan to speak to hv today.thankyou again.
