Food intolerance in bf baby??

Scotmum83 · 25/08/2014 16:55

I have a few food intolerances mainly cows milk. My 5 week old has been to the GP today today due to a rash in her face and persistent nappy rash that looks almost like the skin is burnt or blistered. Does anyone else have experience of this and was it related to an intolerance? Her poo is quite runny and she passes a lot of wind. GP didn't think it was related but I'm not convinced that it's not something I'm eating that is causing her symptoms.

I use soya milk instead of cows milk so wondering if it is possibly soya that she can't tolerate. I'm exclusively breast feeding her.

Thanks

What did the doc suggest? Bfed baby poo is supposed to be runny and lots of 5 week olds have spotty rashes on their face (baby acne). The nappy rash sounds very distressing - Metanium is very good for nappy rash.

It's quite unusual for babies to be affected by allergens in bm.

When I had my baby tested got cows milk allergy when breast feeding I was told if he was allergic he would also be likely to be allergic to soya too.

Green poos in BF babies can indicate it is a food intolerance.

Could be the soya, could be eggs, could be other allergens - if you have an allergy, chances are your baby might have one too but not necessarily the same.

Try cutting the top allergens out of your diet one by one to see if she improves - if you can do it without reducing your own diet to the bare bones, that is! Have you tried oat milk? Almond milk? Rice milk? (although not too much of that because of the arsenic contamination).

Then maybe eggs next, and if still no improvement, try gluten.

My best friend here, her DS3 was highly sensitive to any of his allergy foods if she ate them while she was bf'ing him (Eggs, soya, dairy)

Thanks everyone, we have metanium to try but also going to stop using soya to see if it helps.

Scot how is she doing now? Have a read of this on Kellymom. It explains what's normal and the different types of allergies a bf baby can have Smile

Gp could have said cut it out and let's observe . Common sense to me...
Dd nearly died due from allergens in my bm . It's not that rare .

Scotmum83 · 29/08/2014 16:14

GPs didnt diagnose milk intolerance on me so wasn't expecting much of a response for dd. I'm off soya and think it has helped abe seems more settled. The matanium cream is amazing nearly healed already and it was red raw!! Thanks for your responses.

I'm lactose intolerant and DD was diagnosed as lactose intolerant too at 5 months. The consultant paediatrician said that breast milk is twice as high in lactose as cows' milk, and nothing to do with diet.

Saying that, your DD's symptoms sound more like eczema on her face.

Incidentally, my DD is allergic to all nappy rash creams (including Metanium) so we use E45 nappy rash cream, then douse her in hydrocortisone and diprobase when she has eczema flair ups.

She's on a dairy free diet but has prescription formula. I'm one of the few people to be pushed to stop breastfeeding before 6 months! It has made the world of difference, though. She sleeps through!

The nappy earsh is almost gone and when I've tried drinking soya again she's been very grumpy windy and d
Sicking up her milk. I'm going to try staying off the soy milk again for a couple of weeks and see if it helps. Definitely a grumpy baby today :(
