I don't understand why ds has this reaction??

Ds2 is 2.

He had cmp allergy up to the age of 18 months but is now ale to have butter, milk, fromage frais (which he loves) etc. he will not touch cheese but I think he just dislikes it.

I still bf but have been trying to drop a few feeds. He wouldn't accept cows milk, coconut milk or soya milk in a beaker, cup or bottle. I tried chocolate nesquik but after a few times he got fed up with that.
In desperation I got some aptamil 2-3 in the little carton with a straw thinking the novelty of it might work-it did ! He drank a whole carton, seemed to enjoy it but came out in massive hives all over his cheeks immediately and was very itchy.

I left it a few days and tried again, after a few mouthfuls he started coughing, got hives again on his cheeks and very badly under his armpit (?) he them went to sleep but woke up an hour later and vomited everywhere and after that seemed ok

I don't understand?? He can eat fromage frais? Have butter on his toast and seems ok? He does have eczema round his mouth and a bit on his legs since dairy was reintroduced but why would only aptamil cause such a big reaction?

I'm completely puzzled. Tempted to wait a few days again and re try but hate making him poorly.

I wouldnt try it again as subsequent reactions can be much worse on re-exposure to an allergen.

What other added ingredients does it have?

Edenviolet · 27/05/2014 16:45

It does have fish oil in which I wondered about as all other dcs and me have a shellfish allergy??? We are all ok with fish though but ds1 had an allergy when he was younger to fish which is now outgrown.

Apart from that its just milk, vitamins and minerals from what I can see?

Ds2 has eaten fish before so I'm not sure if it is the fish oil, he has had cod and tuna but obviously I don't know what the source of the fish oil is.
Its very confusing.

you can get wee cows milk cartons too so you could maybe try them if he has been ok with straight cows milk before. Have you tried oat or almond milk?

Edenviolet · 27/05/2014 16:56

He hated oat milk but I could try almond.

If I have a cup of tea and leave the cup with the last bit in he drinks it so I know he's ok with milk as I have my tea really milky. He will eat fromage frais too and is fine so I don't think its the milk??
I will try and get some cartons of cows milk or I'm wondering if I should just replace feeds with a fromage frais and drink of water as he's fine with those and its probably the same as a drink of milk!

I didn't like the reaction to aptamil though, worried me as the hives were instant and huge.

Does it contain soy? DS has massive vomits and eczema breakout after soy.

Edenviolet · 27/05/2014 19:33

I will check but doubt it is that as ds has bread with soya in and other foods and is fine. He often s has some of ds1 soya ice cream as well.

Has he ever had a glass of cows milk?

Edenviolet · 28/05/2014 21:54

No,not a glass of pure milk but he has had very milky tea and things like fromage frais so pretty close to milk in its 'raw'state or perhaps is it just too much cmp and he maybe has an intolerance still?

Hedgehog, it does sound like that. Do you have access to a dietician who can do a skin prick test for milk?

There's a way you can do a test at home. It's described in the complete guide to food allergy book. I can look it up for you if you want.

However, it could be a delayed reaction to milk which may not even come up on skin prick tests. My DD's is like this, she gets eczema on her face (really itchy) about at hour after having anything with milk.

Edenviolet · 28/05/2014 22:09

Ds had skin pricks when younger a few times and at 18 months it was 'negative'

Ds1 is at a different hospital and they do a blood test not skin pricks as they say its more reliable, perhaps I should transfer ds2 there to get bloods done? He is definitely reacting to something.
It wouldn't surprise me as ds1 is 7 and still allergic to cmp and egg so maybe ds2 still is?

It will be a shame as I was so happy when they said it was negative and I followed all advice about giving food with cooked milk in first then progressing to hard cheese then if ok onto yogurt etc then milk but the aptamil really made him ill.

Yes, I'd be interested to do a test at home if you could look it up for me, Thankyou might be interesting to see before I can get him an appt.
