Penicillin allergy?

Does anyone know about penicillin allergy? I'm on my third day of a week's course of penicillin VK for a bacterial throat infection. My throat is improving a lot but I turned into a lobster overnight! I've developed a bright red, flat rash from the neck down and my skin is a little itchy and tender.

Does this sound like a reaction to penicillin or could it be due to my high temperature and from the germ itself, a bit like Scarlet Fever? I know I ought to phone the Dr but I really don't want to stop taking the course of a/b's as dh is off to India tomorrow. I'll be holding the fort here on my own and can't afford to be ill again. I'm not an 'allergic' person, btw.

That is how ds's allergy came out. It looked like red angry welts, poor little thing The started on his back and chest and spread outwards. I woulds have a chat with the doctor if I were you, especialy if it spreads to our face.

Thanks, hmb. That sounds miserable for your ds. My rash is not really welts, more like an all-over flushing of the skin so maybe it's a heat rash. Whatever, dd is enjoying drawing on it with her fingers!

It sounds awfully like an allergy. If it were me, I'd call or visit the gp. Hope you feel better soon.

That sounds like a penicillin allergy to you. Please call your gp. I think you'd rather be at home with a throat infection than in hospital on a drip.

I've got piriton for the children, Robin, I hadn't thought of taking it myself, d'oh! I'll call the GP and see what they say - at least I've a voice today with which to speak.
