Elimination diet

Hello everyone,

I have a 7 week old who was recently diagnosed with severe reflux and as a result I've been out on an elimination diet. I can have meat, fish, vegetables, and fruit but must stay away from dairy, soya, wheat, and nuts. So far it's not been to hard except giving up baked goods! My question though is for anyone else who's gone through this do you have recommendations on things to eat or recipes you liked? Thanks!

Hi there
I cut out dairy and soya first, which was hard, and then eggs and fish. Dairy was the hardest because it's hidden in everything. It was a real struggle to adapt my cooking and eating style but as soon as I saw the change in my dd, gradually improving until we identified fish as an allergen, she is now much happier and more comfortable, the hard work is worth it!

  • be really careful about eating out or even don't eat out at all until you have your head round it
  • dump everything you have in your kitchen that's unsuitable - hide it somewhere. You may accidentally snack on something without thinking and the guilt is terrible when they react!
  • there are loads of good websites for free from cooking - I like the vegan blog oh she glows, and I've just got an excellent cookbook 'the intolerant gourmet' which looks fab
  • Cook up some safe meals - veg or meat curries, shepherds pie, soups etc and freeze for moments of desperation or when you're just too tired to cook.
  • not being able to grab something prepared is the hardest part, I found. So make sure fridge is stocked with humous and veggies to dip in, ham, and you have things like nakd bars, kook chocolate milk, dried fruit etc for quick energy.

Koko chocolate milk, that is!

Hi - My DD's reflux was also set off by sugar and fat. So we went the whole hog! Basically stick to plain grilled meat, chicken, fish. Steamed/boiled veg, rice (red and white mixed with wild make a nice change) and potatoes. Did a lot of risotto's.
All manner of stews are good too.
I've posted some recipes that are gluten, egg and dairy free at allergymums.co.uk. For baking look at vegan recipe books and adapt with gluten free flour - Ms Cupcake and Vegan Cookies invade your cookie jar are good.
