Hi i have an embarrassing problem! Have got frequent smelly wind! I feel lethargic and have little energy, though this could be due to other factors. I am wondering if I may have a wheat intolerance/sensitivity. Any ideas or help gratefully received! Gas mask optional!

What makes you suspect wheat?

Something I've wondered about for quite a while. It seems to fit some of the symptoms. Open to other ideas though

Lactose? IMO more likely, or legumes (lentils etc) not agreeing with you.

Easy to find out- exclude anything you suspect for a few weeks (totally, read all labels!), then reintroduce and see what happens... I would try cows milk first, as it is very common - normal almost - to have some intolerance to lactose. Cheese and butter are usually ok (if it's proper cheese and real butter).

Do you have other symptoms that make you think it may be a wheat intolerance? Headache? Joint/muscle pain? Skin rashes?

Only cows milk protein intolerance can cause wind. Not that I'd know obviously BlushGrin

Lactose certainly gives us (several family members) the dire farts! I think the lactose (sugar) by cause it's not digested (due to a lack of lactase) feeds the bacteria further down the digestive tract and they cause the gas?

I have porridge most mornings, made with semi skimmed milk. I eat a sandwich most days. Sometimes eat beans and lentils. I suffer with IBS too!

It's got worse recently but I don't know why

Ok, ibs too, getting worse... Often seems to get worse the older we get.

If you are interested in RADICAL dietary change, you might want google "whole30" or paleo whole 30, or read Mark Daily Apple.

Try it for a month- no grains, no dairy no legumes. Either it will make a huge difference to you, or it won't Grin, nothing to lose by trying (for me it worked).
