Wheat intolerance - reintroducing after a period GF?

I wondered if anyone else has experience of this. I have bad IBS. Been tested for coeliac disease but it was negative. I did an elimination diet and wheat is definitely a trigger. I went GF over 5 years ago and my symptoms have massively improved. However now I have a fast, significant reaction when I do eat wheat. I've heard that some people's intolerances settle after a period without it and they can reintroduce it. Does anyone have experience of this? How did you go about reintroducing it? Or am I doomed to eat GF forever? (I can cope with it, it's just rather limiting!).

How was coeliac ruled out? My bloods were negative but my biopsy showed significant damage to my intestines.

Only by blood tests, never been offered a biopsy.
