Calcium & breast feeding

My 8mth old DS is currently waiting for allergy testing, I am pretty sure he is allergic to cows milk and has therefore not had any diary since he began weaning at 6 months.

I'm worried that he's not had enough calcium. He is exclusively breastfed and I can continue this until he is 11mths.

Is breast milk enough calcium or is it likely he has missed out because he is not having yoghurts/cheese& cows milk??

Watch out for what you yourself are eating.

Have you tried giving him foods like pureed broccoli, mashed beans or lentils, tofu, muffins made with blackstrap molasses (you could add pureed broccoli to these), baby cereal mixed with enriched rice milk or soy milk or a soy formula, figs (mashed or finely chopped or pureed), pureed rhubarb, salmon and sardines with bones - all have calcium.

Hi, thanks for replying.

I cut diary out my diet some weeks ago & defo saw an improvement.

Re: Using an enriched formula for cereal, is this ok to do without consulting GP/dietician?

As long as you aren't seriously deficient in calcium, your milk will have enough. Humans didn't evolve to drink animal milk, so it's not necessary if he's getting human milk.

Well that's really good to know. Many thanks x

BFing will meet all his calcium needs. Take a supplement to keep yourself topped up.

Rice milk isn't recommended before they are 5 as it contains inorganic arsenic and around 60% of babies that are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy. Oatly milk and Koro (formerly Kara) coconut milk are both good for adding to cereal etc.

The biggest issue with dairy allergic kids is getting enough calories into them. We would add olive oil to food and give him high fat things, humous, avocado etc.

Hi,
Yes my DS has lots of olive olive oil, hummus & avocado too!
