Penicillin allergy???

Ds2 is 14 months old.

Just over a week ago he was prescribed Augmentin for a uti. After the first few doses he had quite a few horrible nappies which I assumed was the medicine. His temperature was persistent and I noticed this was listed as a side effect in the leaflet.

On friday we had to take him to hosp as he was no better. After a dose of augmentin he vomited everywhere. I asked the dr could he be allergic to it but they said def not as he had no hives and said it was incorrect about it causing a temp despite this being in the medicine info.

We continued with the augmentin and today was the first temperature free day in over a week (its a 10 day course last day tomorrow) but ds has now got a rash all over his tummy (fine red spotty raised rash). After a dose of AB his stomach is very gurgly and he burps/retches a bit then settles.
He has had amoxicillin in the past so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Other dcs have severe food allergies and ds2 also milk/egg allergic although symptoms of that include hives/swelling/vomiting so slightly different.

Is it possible he is allergic to penicillin or is it just a normal reaction to illness and Ab?

I am allergic to penecillin and it produces a healthy smattering of hives all over trunk and legs.

I don't know if this happens to everyone; I was just giving you my experience of the allergy.

The rash he has is def not hives, looks similar to a heat rash really. Perhaps it is just a coincidence. He has been quite poorly so maybe the symptoms are all down to that?

He had bloods done in hospital that were normal except for anaemia and low white blood cell count-not sure if that means anything or could be affecting him.

My DD is allergic to penicillin (she had amoxicillin). Developed few spots other back after a couple of days. Within 24 hours she was completely red with hives, all over her back & front. Had some on her arms, legs, face & neck as well. Apparently I am allergic as well, assume I had the same reaction.

If it was an allergy it's usually pretty obvious.

Sorry, that should have said 'on her back'.

When my ds was given antibiotics for the first time, we were told to watch out for a rash as this was the sign of an allergic reaction. Sure enough, a rash appeared within hours of his first dose, possibly sooner. At the time I was dubious it was a proper allergic reaction, but subsequently his sister turned out to be severely allergic to nuts and I found out that two of his grandparents are allergic to penecillin. So I'm now convinced it was an allergic response.

I have absolute no medical background, but I would have thought that if your ds was allergic to the ABs, he would have developed a rash straight away. I think antibiotics can often cause an upset stomach and I guess a UTI could be the cause of a temperature. However, given that he has a rash now, could he have reacted to something else? My dd's first significant allergic reaction to nuts looked exactly like a measles rash - freaked the GP out no end.

I assumed an allergy would be quite instant too as dcs food allergies all are.

I just wondered as his stomach does the same loud churning and then retching/vomiting like when dcs have had something they are allergic to.I will keep an eye on the rash.

I think he has just been really poorly and now I'm panicking over all his symptoms.

I don't think he could be reacting to anything else, his diet is milk/egg/nut free and he hasn't tried anything new recently.

He has however had nearly 2 weeks of calpol/nurofen every day and AB so maybe has got a funny tummy from that.
Really not sure what the rash could be.

I expect it's a viral rash actually; they are common. My DD gets them with virtually every viral thing she contracts. Her rashes are usually pin-prick types and on the trunk mainly; sometimes they creep to her head and legs.

I hope he gets better soon.

ariane5 · 24/06/2013 10:44

Ds seems a lot better today.

Rash still there but he isn't bothered by it. His uti was caused by e.coli perhaps that has caused the rash?

Last day of ab today so fingers x that's the end of this illness!

Not sure about anything other than i am life threateningly allergic to penecillin the first time i had it i vomited a lot. The next time i ended up in icu but i never had hives !! So i would be careful. I hope your little one is soon feeling brighter
