Milk allergy?

DD is nearly 6mo and we started weaning her maybe about 1month ago, until then she was ebf apart from a few top up feeds when she was born. She developed excema about the same time as we started weaning but gp doesn't think the 2 are related?

I started doing a few kit days at work so she had a bottle on Tuesday then again this weekend, these were the ready to drink sma gold bottles. Then last night I bought a can of powdered milk and gave her 8oz of this. She took 4oz, screamed then threw up what I can only imagine was the whole 4oz. (thankfully all over dp's shoulder, back and legs) then almost immediately I noticed blister like white spots on her legs and they were really red around the spots. Then she developed a horrible red rash all over her chest, neck, back and arms.

She still has a rash this morning but seems absolutely fine (apart from what sounds like a dry cough?) does this sound like a milk allergy? If so why only when having powdered milk?

Also what happens next? Do I just have to convince gp that he needs to do tests?

the dry cough is not a good sign. please mention all symptoms esp this one when you go to your gp.
ask to be reffered to a pead allergy clinic, and get some expert help.
you can ring the anaphylaxis campaign for help or name of doc/or of nearest clinic to you.

dont be fobbed off by yr gp.

Thank you eragon, I will try and contact someone. Is this something that can wait till tomorrow? As I said she is absolutely fine in herself, But if someone in the know thinks I should seek medical attention ASAP I obviously will.

I suspect that its worth having some piriton to hand, and that after this reaction will have worse stomach aches/reflux and ezcema.

need to go to gp as soon as poss. if this happens again, call an ambulance, the horse cough was/is a pretty serious symptom and will need medical attention.

a similar thing happened to us when our son was small, btw.

It's not uncommon for them to react more severely on the 2nd / 3rd / 4th time they're exposed to an allergen, which could explain why she hasn't reacted to previous formula feeds.

It happened like that with my twins, it was about the 3rd offering that provoked the serious reaction.

Hope you get to the bottom of it, but be prepared for a long wait for allergy testing < bitter experience>. My GP happily referred but the appt we got was a good few months away.

the wait will be for a london hos 8-10 weeks. which is better than it used to be.
hopefully you will get some advice and some allergy formula on prescription.

Thanks again, well I saw a gp today who was useless IMO. I told her everything and she said well you need to speak to a hv, she will be able to advise you as to what milk dd can have. So I asked what I should do in the interim and she just said, 'well bf her of course' I told her I was working and she was just so disinterested I left.

Spoke to hv who went along similar lines except she advised me to try her with a hypoallergenic milk........ I said I would assume this would still have cows milk in it??? To which she said well yes but if you get her a cows milk allergy milk she should be ok! so I said I will just carry on bf and leave work to feed her until Thursday when she was going to come and see me as I was worried she may have a more severe reaction.

Anyway she rang back, said she had organised some formula on prescription and has made me an appointment with a dietician so hopefully this should be ok. Why the dr couldn't have done this in the first place is beyond me as the hv had to get a referall from the gp for dietician anyway.
