Hayfever help...PLEASE!!

Has there been a Hayfever thread recently? I did search but couldn't find one.
Having bad symptoms at the moment. Runny nose which is SOOOO itchy, itchy eyes and a wheeze and cough. Can't take anti-histamines that have drowsy side effects as they really knock me out. Am taking Clarityn which helps in the morning but by mid afternoon symptoms all back again, plus even tho it's supposed to be non-drowsy it makes me feel sleepy and irritable (poor kids bearing the brunt).

Any suggestions aboutn other things to do or tablets to try? Getting desperate.

I swear by the nose spray, flixonase.

Having a house full of hayfevers suffers including my DH who suffered for years and ended up having to take an inhaler because he never took anything could I suggest you go to the GP. They can give you stronger products and keep going back until you have the right product.

It is a miserable condition and I dont particularly rate the stuff you can get over the counter.

Have tried some Vaseline smeared up the nose (it does work!) to stop the pollen sticking. No one can tell - honestly!

Watch the wheezing and cough, my children and DH ended up taking an inhaler to control it in the end.

close all the windows and doors and hibernate!

Lots of hayfever sufferers are struggling atm.

Id say speak to GP

Also

wear wrap around sunglasses

use haymax or Vaseline

ask dr for a nasal spray or try an over the counter spray

eye drops

an inhaler if you have one

always take your shoes off at your front door to save trailing pollen throughout your house,

undress in the bathroom not the bedroom as pollen clings to clothes

shower every evening, and wash hair, again to get rid of pollen.

dust with a damp cloth

One of the other inflammatory mediators causing hayfever are Leukotrienes, a bit like histamine they can be blocked with a drug called 'Singulair' or Montelukast to give it it's real name. Ask your GP to prescribe it, it may well revolutionise your life and your future summers. Start early, so maybe a month before you get symptoms, as once your system is 'primed' by inflammatory mediators, it's very hard to dampen them down.

Try a 24 hour tablet taken at night - will be at its peak as the pollen rises in the morning. Second all the above suggestions re showering/washing/dusting. Also, the Vaseline thing really does work - it's the single most effective thing I do

I thought the Vaseline thing was just me - and it does work. Please dont suffer.

When I was growing up my parents didnt really have a clue about this sort of thing and I remember being in Kensington High Street outside Russell and Bromley with tears literally pouring down my face. I could barely breath and had the headache from hell (its funny what I remember!).

Eventually at 16 I took myself to the GP and got it more under control. Now when my DS's started getting symptons I took them straight to the docs. Once you get the right thing you will wonder what took you so long....

7 yr old currently taking daily loratadine, topped up with chlorphenamine throughout the day.

Any good remedies for eye symptoms? My hayfever is bad at the moment and each year it seems to be get worse. I have just tried vaseline and use a nose spray, flixonase which seems to help a little.

lay with a cold damp cloth over ur eyes and don't go out! not practical I know!
