Reaction to hypoallergenic suncream...

3 yo DS is allergic to nuts, sesame, dairy and egg and I just put a bit of hypoallergenic suncream on him and he came out in some hives...could it be the suncream?

I had recent,y eaten cheese sandwich but hands had been washed and he is not normally that sensitive.

Would they have to label it if it had nuts or seeds in?

Any recommendations for truly benign suncreams?

sensitive skin may often react this way with allergic people, but also there is a lot of food type products in suncream.

Dd has a number of allergies and reacts to a number of (supposedly sensitive/hypoallergenic) suncreams.

Sunsense used to be the one in the BNF and was recommended by DS's paed dermatologist. It was great for years but then suddenly started stinging him. We've found that pattern tends to repeat quite often. Until last year we'd had great success with the PizBuin once a day factor 50 stuff but then it also seemed to sting/bring out the blotches.

Our experience is similar to Spud's, it's basically a case of trial and error when it comes to suitable suncreams that don't cause a reaction. Every time we thought we'd found one DS didn't react to, after a while (weeks or even months) he would suddenly start getting all red and blotchy. We've being using Sunsense Sensitive factor 50 for a couple of summers now and so far so good but I'm not ruling out a reaction in the future.

Thanks for all your replies. I will seek out some alternatives and keep trying. So annoying because suncream makes my other DS's eczema flare so have spent many years trying all sorts and still not found one that neither react to.

My ds has a sunscreen allergy (which apparently is quite rare, most children are just sensitive to it). Even his dermatologist couldn't suggest one. However I found a mineral based one called laverna which contains no parabens. It's a bit sudocrem like but it's the only one that he can use.

My DS reacts to lots of creams etc but is Ok with Lavera / Green People. Lavera is my favourite. The baby one is a bit like sudocreme (it has zinc oxide in it) but the family one is a bit lighter, easier to apply and a bit orange, but runs in better than the white one. The SPF factors are low than you might expect for a children's sunscreen but they work well for my pale Irish skinned children living on mainland Europe where the summers are warm!
