Allergy to wine

lottie63 · 20/03/2013 19:23

A friend of mine seems to suffer when he drinks wine... Not immediately but a few hours later he has sneezing and blotchiness on face and chest. He typically only drinks white wine and it appears some types are worse than others (all are sauvignon blanc though).

So, does anyone know of any allergy free wine. I m not sure what it is about white wine ghat makes him react but whatever's in there must change from maker to maker.

Allergy to wine?

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 20/03/2013 19:30

A friend of mine developed an allergy to sulfites, which a lot of wines contain.

Does he have a problem with anything else? (jelly babies are pretty bad apparently)

I didn't know this was possible! What a terrible affliction. (Sorry - no practical help)

lottie63 · 20/03/2013 19:41

He has an inhaler for asthma and I think he is sensitive to his bathroom (I don t know if it's bath cleaner or a product of some sort). He had dark circles under his eyes quite alot which I think of as allergy-related as my children suffer from those when they have hayfever. Interesting about jelly babies...

My. Worst. Nightmare. EVER!!!

Sorry, very unhelpful.

I once thought I was allergic to red wine as after drinking copious amounts of it, I came out in a terrible rash all over me, but luckily for me it was Scarlet Fever and not an allergy to wine.

I've offered to drink his share. He s not having that lol. I would like to find a white wine that didnt make him suffer so much though. Sulphites ring a bell. Do some brands have more than others?

I have reactions when I drink wine as it is high in histamines. Some are worse than others and if I am already having a slight reaction to something else then it is obviously worse.
I now only drink reds and stick to the ones I know I can have after ending up in A&E for 16 hours as I had to use my epi pen Hmm

Blending · 20/03/2013 20:19

I'm allergic to red wine.

I swing from the chandlers after just a glass and come out in blotches, sneeze and my eyes swell up until they are nearly closed.

Its simular to the reaction I have to cats without the swinging bit.

I've never found out what causes it, but can have a small amount in a sauces etc without it affecting me.

The only thing I found that helps it drinking white or rose insted!

lottie63 · 20/03/2013 20:20

Oh, I didnt know white wine has histamines in. I don t think he can drink much red as his stomach gets upset with the tannins

All wine has histamines in it just white usually has more for some reason. I only realised this as my DD is on a low amine (of any type) diet and although she is only 12 when we agreed we would all do the diet with her she laughed and said no more wine for the adults then. Then when I saw my Dr I asked about it and he said although they don't think I am allergic to wine as it is high in histamines that this exaggerates any reaction I am having producing my anaphylaxis. Now I always take a piriton before drinking wine and make sure I am not alone and whoever is with me knows how to work my epi pen Grin

blending like you I'm allergic to cats Sad and also have a similar reaction to wines, wheezing, swollen lips, itchiness.

No swinging from the ceiling thou

montmartre · 20/03/2013 22:53

Goodness- I didn't know any of this... I have been suffering heavy cold-like symptoms after drinking wine (all 2 times a year that I drink) for a while now... not after champagne though.

eragon · 21/03/2013 09:18

Lots of stuff in wine /alchohol can cause allergic reactions.

food, such as fish, sulphites, histamine etc are well known for causing asthma hives etc.

oh, and migraines, (which is me btw with certain red wines.)

am not sure how you go about getting some info on this, perhaps the allergy charities have some lists or contacts so you can explore different wine that doesnt have any of your triggers in it
