Making up Formula

Those of you giving formula to over 1 year olds, do you still make it up hot?

DD is 14mo and having pepti, but I was wondering whether the need to 'steralise' the powder lessens as they get older. My DM always used milk powder in cooking to economise and never mixed it with hot water.

she wouldnt have been using formula milk powder though and if it was being used in cooking then it would have been getting heated. Formula powder isnt sterile and the water is supposed to be hot to kill the bacteria in the powder.

I make it up cool in the night, otherwise I use boiling water for about 1/3 and shake then add cold water to cool it, Ds is far too impatient to wait for a bottle to cool!

ilovepowerhoop is right, and the method for hypoallergenic formula is the same as for 'ordinary' formula. It should be made with water at least 70 degrees to kill the bugs in the powder. Lots of mums ignore this with no ill effects, but they are still taking a risk.

Can't see why the method suggested by janey wouldn't work though. If you were feeling really organised, you could even keep previously boiled water in the fridge to cool down the hot formula.

Actually she sometimes gave it to us cold to go on cereal (bleurgh) and my Dd has tap water to drink so no need to boil and cool water. Might do the 1/3 boiling 2/3 tap though to make it a bit easier.
