Is this an allergic reaction??

I have suspected ds, 9mths, has a lentil allergy as he always gets severe congestion a few days after eating red lentils.

He has appt at allergy clinic next week so just wanted to recheck.

So he had lentil stew yesterday which he ate well but was bit grumpy all day.

Tried to give it to him again at lunch but he refused and only had about 5 spoonfuls.

2 hours later he had explosive diarrhea.

5 hours later fed him bland tea of mashed potato and sweet potato and he vomited it all up violently.

Have put him to bed with no bottle as think his tummy must be cramping as grumpy.

The thing is my dd has cmpa and always vomited straight after then had diarrhea.

Can you have a delayed reaction like this? After all I only expected congestion and if the vomiting had been an allergic reaction shouldn't it have happened yesterday afternoon after he first ate it?

I know the hospital can help me next week but interested in what people think.

You are playing a very dangerous and irresponsible game. Wait for testing. Don't mean to be harsh but that is not a good idea.

How can it be dangerous when only had congestion?

Dd vomited after every milk bottle and had continuous diarrhea and was told for 5 months that a virus and not cows milk allergy.

Anaphylactic shock is a different thing but that's not we are talking about.

The reaction can get worse with every exposure and become anaphylactic.

I appreciate that. I certainly won't be giving him any more!!!

I was only expecting the usual congestion but the thing is that you don't expect lentils to cause what looks like a severe cold so never could definitely attribute it to the lentils. Even though always happened after he has them.

The diarrhea and vomiting is new And was not expected. He has had lentils about 10 times before. I'm once again still not sure whether there can be a delay in eating them and the reaction.

I amused to being fobbed off regarding allergie by doctors so wanted to get it straight in my head. I would never have given him them again if I had known this would happen!
This isn't the only allergy he has and reactions differ so very confusing.

it's quite common to be allergic to lentils, would avoid lentils and other legumes until further testing. hope all goes ok at ur appointment

I have done a lot of research and am of course avoiding all lentils and other legumes.

However I am still puzzled as was initially a delayed reaction so keep thinking that could have just been something else. Would have thought it would have happened on the first day he ate the, not the second.

not sure, we've never had vomiting or the runs due to allergy, we've always just had lip swelling, puffy eyes, eczema etc. Though delayed reactions are possible, and as u know reactions can vary each time.

When ur certain of what allergies he has it will be easier for u x

I am hoping the hospital will do some allergy testing so fingers crossed on Tuesday. Otherwise just keep going round in circles.

It's the first appt since being referred so hope they are as that's what I asked for but may just be initial consultation. Who knows!!!

if they do spt they will expect him not to have had any anti-histamine for 48 hours

tho for RAST tests its ok if they have had it

It does sound like a IgE reaction, rather than intolerence. and you are best to avoid completely until testing.
please let us know what the results are, and we will support you with any diet changes/ideas that you may need to make in the future.

Thank you. His poor tummy is still a wreck and is just likes my dds when she had cmpa. We are going through clothes like nobody's business!

Talk about feeling guilty about testing him again but then also feel glad I did as have the chance to discuss it at the hospital.

We don't know if he has cmpa as have avoided since birth and worried as when he has had his bottle his tummy has exploded so scared it may have become more sensitive since the reaction to lentils.

So avoiding all the unknowns and he is living on incredibly boring diet.

From what I have read an allergy to lentils can be isolated or can include other legumes and peanuts. He is definitely dodgy with chick peas which is shame as he did and we live on homous.

Has had peanut butter loads of times but stopping that too until Tuesday just incase.

I dont think you were dangerous and irresponsible. The only way to find these things out is trial and error after all.

Its not like lips swelled oncs and you threw caution to the wind a week later to double check.

Im having similar issues at the moment with my son. All his allergies are obvious hives/anaphylaxis allergies but theres a few stray ones getting through which effect his gut just like you describe.

I hope the allergy testing goes well.

P.S WRT allergy testing- my son got negative SPT for soya, 22 on his Rast test (rather high)
But gets stomach pains (well we assume so, he cant sleep) with acidic smelling, green mucusy stools.

Does anyone know what this means?

Don't worry about hijacking...the more info the better.

Ds now a worry. He has diarrhea and vomiting after every bottle so now worried that whereas he was tolerating cartons of formula as the protein is denatured, his allergic repsosnse to the lentils has increased his allergy to cmp.

So cutting out his bottles and giving oat milk for breakfast to see if things improved. He has been a wreck all day and so upset and crying all day. Hope the hospital tomorrow are good as need some answers.

Are you sure he doesnt have norovirus?

Also, if he has a CMP allergy, why would you give him cows milk formula?

Definitely not a bug as fine after food.

If you have a cows milk protein allergy and are allergic to the whey, then this is denatured or broken down when milk is heat treated such as UHT milk or cartons of formula.

My dd who is 7 has it and was able to tolerate under doctors advice cartons of milk and now uht milk. S just started baby on cartons of aptamil from birth to avoid the trouble we had with her.

However if you have a virus or something that makes your stomach more sensitive then it can bring on a temporary cows milk protein allergy. So I am wondering if the lentil allergy has made his more pronounced and stopped his body tolerating t in carton form.

Obviously some children who have cmpa can not tolerate uht milk but we were lucky with my daughter.

Does that make sense?

You said at the start that if you have a cows milk protein allergy then a child can sometimes be ok with UHT milk or cartons of formula because the heat breaks down the structure. But a stomach bug can make the stomach sensitive and cause a cows milk protein allergy.

But wasnt it a cows milk protein allergy what you were talking about in the first place?

So doctor very nice and said that will give him skin prick test in 2 months once he is one.

He agrees that reactions since last week have been milk related and just coincidence that had lentils.

So I still don't understand why milk allergy suddenly got so bad. He has given us Nutramigen as I don't want ds on soya.

But!! Need to go back to doctors tomorrow and ask for Aptmil pepti as he hates the Nutramigen. Also there is something really wrong aside from milk.

He had some buttered, non dairy butter, bread earlier then screamed and writhed around in pain for ten mins and them did 4 massive sloppy poos.

He is quiet, lethargic and seems to be having trouble swallowing. It's such a worry as dont know what is wrong.

It can't be a bug as had no poos when stopped milk for 24 hours.

Anyway, now need to post thread about advice for milk alternatives.

You surely need to speak to medical professionals again and follow their advice rather than the advice of people on the internet.
