Washing powder!

DS has just been diagnosed with eczema and I want to do all I can to make him as comfortable as possible - he's only 5 months.

Have any if you found a particular washing powder/liquid good for sensitive skins and do I still use fabric softener?

Is there anything else i should covdider doing/not foing? we have Dermol and hydrocortisone 1% from the dr.

Different things work for different people but in general:

• Bathe every day using a specialist bath oil like Oilatum or Aveeno. E45 is not recommended as it contains lanolin, neither is aqueous cream.

• Moisturise multiple times a day with an emollient - you may need to try a few to see which works best. We use Doublebase.

• Use steroid cream on red patches - make sure you're using a strong enough cream for long enough.

• Only use non bio washing powder, no fabric conditioner. 100% cotton clothing and bedding.

• Get a referral to a specialist (GPs not usually that hot on eczema), see if you can get some food allergy testing..

It might be hit and miss with washing powders liquids etc.

You'll probably find its a process of elimination.

For instance my DS can only use Surf or Persil. Fairy non bio is toxic to his skin and we can use comfort.

Strangely enough surf Persil and comfort are all made by unilever so I don't know what it is that they do differently but it works for us.

Surcare is worth a try, for a while it was all we could use but now DS1 is older (nearly 6) and his skin's much better he's fine with standard non-bio.

I use these:

This works for us. DH gets bad eczema too.

surcare washing powder and softer! also give everything an extra rinse

watch what he's eating, too see if his eczema is worse after certain foods

I have terrible eczema and use surcare, which is great. Otherwise boots do a wash powder and f conditioner for eczema/sensitive skin sufferers. X

Ate there any known foods as allergens for eczema? DS is still breast fed but I'll happily change my diet if it would help him. We're due to wean in a few weeks is there anything I should avoid?

Method works for us.

We use fairy gel capsule things as I find the powders all leave residues. And fairy leaves far less fragrance on the clothes than persil etc which I figure should be a good thing for ezcema. You also have to just be aware that everyone reacts to different things and to trust your own instincts and observations. I get cracked and bleeding skin from pretty much any products that's labelled "for sensitive skin". Just one of those things. Anything by Simple is death to my skin, but I'm ok with Johnsons Baby. Just keep things basic but be aware of the possibility that sometimes the product that should be fixing things is making it worse, it's all about what works for your child.
