Any advice on what to expect at an allergy clinic appointment for DS?

DS, 3, has had allergic reactions to eggs several times (red blotchy rash, hives, maybe finds breathing harder) so the GP has referred him to the John Radcliffe allergy clinic. If anyone has any advice on what we should expect to happen at the appointment so I can prepare us both I'd be really grateful!

I can tell you what happened at ours. Not sure yours will be the same, they may take blood for testing instead.

We spoke to the consultant, she prepared a list of things to test him for based on what we had told her about his reactions to certain foods. We then went for skin prick testing where they drop a solution containing the allergen onto the skin, prick through it (doesn't hurt according to DC) then you wait for 15 mins to see the size of the reaction wheal if any. They also do a positive and negative control.

Then we went back to discuss the results with the consultant and then went to wait to see the dietician.

Sounds similar to us. They talked to us in detail about previous reactions and history and did skin prick tests based on that. It's worth thinking about what else you would like him tested for as they asked me this. We had tests during consultation rather than going back in for them and are now waiting to see dietician.

Can I just hijack please and ask whereabouts on the body they do the test? I'm taking 7 month old DS to the allergy clinic tomorrow and just wondering what to dress him in for ease of access!

Usually they do it on the arm but they might do it in the back for a baby.

Thanks for your replies! The appointment was today and it was much as trixymalixy and shelsco said. I was really worried about the skin prick test being painful/frightening for DS but I could see that it was just a scratch and he had no problems at all with it.

glad it went well, is he allergic to eggs then? have they picked up on any other allergies?

Thanks Ukey. They only tested for eggs as that was the only thing to trigger a reaction, although said peanut allergy is closely related to egg allergy so to watch out for this. The test showed he was allergic to eggs but not on a severe scale and they expect him to grow out of it by 5. I'm to try introducing egg in a controlled way (they've given mew a protocol) in 6-12 mo.
