We had suspected it might be as from when he was tiny he vomited at the tiniest bit of milk or dark chocolate, but then he is also allergic to nuts and so there is always the issue with contamination - and by the time I found Kinnerton he associated it with vomiting so wouldn't try it.
Oddly enough though he can eat white chocolate without a reaction.

I have not come across anyone with a cocoa allergy before now and was wondering how common it is?

Never heard of cocoa allergy but white chocolate doesn't contain cocoa solids so that explains why he can eat that without any reaction. Sorry to hear your DS's list is getting longer but at least you know what to avoid now.

My cousin is allergic to chocolate. When I mentioned it to my dd's allergy consultant (my dd is allergic to nuts), she thought a cocoa allergy was very unusual.

I'm allergic to chocolate too. And it runs as far as cocoa butter in cosmetics (which is a pain). But its not exactly that difficult.

What is more difficult is the more recent allergy to paracetamol and codeine.

What puzzled me is that the cocoa came back as a reaction on the skin prick tests - and he can't eat regular chocolate, but that cocoa butter in white chocolate does not seem to provoke a reaction ( thankfully!)

well, there is soya in most chocolate nowadays, which is a very common allergen - although not in cocoa obv
