Gluten Free / Dairy Free shopping online - which websites to use?

Hi,

we have recently gone GF/DF for DS1 who is 3 years old. Can you please share the websites you use for shopping for GF/DF stuff online. we are in the middle of nowhere so no local shops stock anything interesting bar the bread/soya milk etc.

Seriously, if they'll deliver to you, Tesco & Sains have fairly good ranges. Ordering a shop online often has more special allergy things in stock than a nearby store.

A note on milk - DO NOT use that oaty milk thing - it's disgusting! Kara coconut milk is much better & v. like cow's milk; pancakes, white sauce etc still work fine.

I'm gluten free for me, and dairy/soy free whilst I'm still feeding CMPI DD. I found when cutting each out of my diet that there was a definite pattern to how I found it:
Week 1: PANIC! I can eat nothing! Researched loads, felt pretty down that I had so little I could eat
Weeks 2-3: Ooh, I CAN eat x instead of y, that would work fine. Started to find alternatives
Weeks 4+: New 'diet' felt normal again & became second nature quite quickly.

That initial panic is the worst though. Good luck!

If any of the major supermarkets deliver, its a great way to shop. I use Ocado, and they have a great range of gf/df foods, and the allergens in the not specifically allergy friendly food are clearly marked.

Goodness Direct are pretty good online

It is worth questioning anyone you meet in the FreeFrom aisle as to where they eat out, buy food etc - I've found out some great information that way, and you may find that theres a shop worth travelling to just to stock up on treats. And if you have a big freezer, you can buy more - I buy gf cocktail sausages from M&S at Christmas to last me all year

We think Oatly is great! I can't tell the difference between it and cow'smilk in cereal, it makes a good white sauce and the oat cream is pretty good too!!

Goodness direct and dietary needs direct have pretty expensive postage costs. I also just order from the major supermarkets.

We love Oatly too! I quite often have it in my own cereal if we're running low on the "real" stuff and find it just as nice as cows milk, if a little different.

Just me then re the Oatly TBF I was never very good at remembering to shake it up first, meant I either had grey water or grey sludge at the end!

Oatly isn't guaranteed gf is it ? You need to be v careful with oats if gf as they are often cross contaminated, and even if pure, some people react

CMOTDibbler is right, oat milk is not suitable for those who have to avoid gluten. Soya, almond or coconut milk should all be fine though.

dev, are you following Sunderland protocol, or 'just' going cf/gf?

there's quite a bit more to avoid doing Sunderland.... I found we had to be really strict with dd1 in the early days, as otherwise she was cunningly upping her intake of foods which gave he the reaction she was seeking.

we couldn't use a lot of mainstream gf/cf products in the early days for this reason. I shopped mostly at DietaryNeedsDirect initially, and then added in Goodness Direct afte a while.

these days dd1 can manage with a few supermarket gf products, but we are 6 years down the Sunderland gf/cf line now.

Hi silver, sorry for the late response, I just saw this now.

We are just going GF/CF on the advice of Anthony Haynes. We had his urine tested at Anulatus and it came back as not sensitive to either Gluten or casien. This is mostly to help his gut as his constipation is causing a lot of problems.

Most of supermarket stuff comes from sainsbury's free from range or waitrose and the rest is all home made.

Thanks for the website tips again. Do you know of any shop which sells this stuff in or around London. I am in and out of London most days and would love to browse an actual shop to find and try new things or is it likely to just be a collection of what's on offer at waitrose/Sainsbury's.
