what type of 'milk' for dairy/soya allergic child?

My 16mo son was diagnosed with cow's milk protein allergy age 7mo due to poor growth and has been dairy free since then. He has been on wysoy formula for some months as we just couldn't get him to take a prescription one. His growth is now back on track. Recently the dietician told me to change from wysoy formula to alpro soya plus one milk - cue terrible diarrhoea and loads of eczema. We changed back to wysoy but it hasn't improved! Now the GP recommends referral back to the allergy clinic as it is likely he has become intolerant to soya.

What type of milk or similar substitute do dairy/soya free kids have????

Hi, my ds has oat milk but they should have prescription formula until 2 if poss. Did you give it in a bottle? Bypasses a few taste buds, mine will happily drink it in a bottle but never from a cup. It is disgusting! We use Neocate.

Sainsbury's sell almond milk. It's lovely. You can also get rice milk, goat milk and I've seen hazelnut milk too.

Kara coconut milk is nice.

Pumpkin Jack is right! No other dairy free 'milk' is suitable as a main milk drink before the age of two, although it can be used in cooking. Rice milk is unsuitable before the age of 4. Goat/sheep's milk is also unsuitable for most dairy free children, as the proteins are too similar to cow's milk. If you need a milk, that is dairy and soya free then you will need to get a prescription from the doctor for a hydrolysed formula. We had Nutramigen AA, which is hypoallergenic. Apparently it tastes foul, but you can add strawberry Nesquik (apparently) to help disguise the taste.

Just to add that Neocate Active is available in unflavoured or blackcurrant flavour sachets. My DS preferred the unflavoured (no idea, it's disgusting!) but I know many children prefer the blackcurrant one. DS stayed on Neocate until he was 5 and has only recently changed to soya milk (we tried oat milk but he didn't like it).

totally agree with freefrommum and pumpkinjack - under two he should definitely be on a hydrolysed formula. Other than that goats milk will be unsuitable if it's for a child with a cow's milk protein allergy. Rice milk should be avoided due to possible excess arsenic consumption (esp for children). We use oat milk fortified with calcium (never go for the organic variety as it is never fortified with calcium as they've never found an organic source for added calcium)

Okay, guess we will have to try a non soya based formula. I just can't see him taking to it though! We had a false start with nutramigen when he was first diagnosed iwth CMPA - he wouldn't take it no matter what I put in with it!!

DD was allergic to Nutromigen so she was prescribed Aptamil Pepti she liked that

I have heard quite a few mums say that their child took to the taste of Aptamil Pepti better than Nutramigen so might well be worth asking for that instead.

Just to add to this...we are 1 month into using oat milk and DS is accept it well!!
