Benadryl under 2 years old?

Ds (16 months) is a bit post-virally hivey/itchy at the moment after having hand foot and mouth a couple of weeks ago. His specialist has recommended a daily dose of cetirizine for the next week or so. He was prescribed it at 8 months but we have run out of the generic stuff that we were given by the pharmacy. Is Benadryl the same stuff? The box says not recommended for under two's Confused. Can anyone advise please??

TIA

Thanks BlackOutTheSun. I do have Piriton for him, but cetirizine is longer-acting and non-drowsy so only needs one small dose a day. He tends not to sleep very well on Piriton, I believe it makes a lot of kids hyper! The specialist assured us that there's no problem giving it daily for a few weeks, I just want to be sure I'm giving him the same thing.
