Latex allergies

Today Dd1, who has cerebral palsy, wore her lyrca shorts to school (they are to hold her muscles tighter and help with walking etc) they have a band of rubbery stuff on the waistband and around the legs. When I took them off, she had a rash similar to the reaction she had when she had contact with a latex glove at the ear piercers. I can only describe the rubbery stuff as the same stuff that is on some strapless bras or holdup stockings. Does this stuff contain latex???

dd2 reacts to some knicker elastics.

misdee · 02/03/2006 23:25

could it sweat rash?

sparklymieow · 02/03/2006 23:26

its not elastic, its like a rubbery band to hold the shorts in place on the inside. I know i have the same stuff on one of my bras.

Mmmm, probably.

FWIW Has she ever had kiwi fruit? Apparently latex allergy is linked with kiwi fruit allergy (which I have) and birch pollen allergy (hay fever in spring - which I also have!) Not always though, but kiwi does give me a tingly mouth!

sparklymieow · 02/03/2006 23:26

nope it was itchy and raised.

Yes it's latex. Can she wear something else under the shorts?

sparklymieow · 03/03/2006 09:43

right, will get in touch with the physio and find out if they can make a pair without the latex band.. god, I just thought we would have aviod latex gloves, this is harder than I thought.

ermh... watch out for of ballons too.

misdee · 03/03/2006 16:38

we've already covered balloons, i am about to call the soft play centre we are going to tomorrow to ask them about it.

sparklymieow · 03/03/2006 17:55

the physio dept. think that they can't make the shorts without the latex band :( but they are going to find out if they can make them out of another material.

OP posts:
Chandra · 03/03/2006 20:26

Would it be possible to cover the band with another material? Could you sew some other fabric on top of the latex area? Hope so, that would be the fastest route if possible... Good luck.
