New food allergy support group for parents
A new parent group for families with a food allergic child has been set up by child health experts at St Mary?s Hospital. The group is thought to be the first of its kind in the country and is facilitated by the hospital allergy clinic.
Food allergy affects five in every 100 children in the UK and appears to be increasing. Food allergy happens when the body?s immune system reacts to an ingredient that is harmless to most people and symptoms can occur within minutes of eating the food. The most common food allergies are egg, milk and nut allergy.
Over the coming months 12 food allergy support meetings are planned to take place around London, facilitated by paediatricians, specialist nurses and dieticians from the hospital who will be on hand to provide expert advice.
They will give parents experiencing the same problems the opportunity to meet in an informal, relaxed environment where they can share tips on ?free from? recipes, useful websites, where to eat out and daily practical issues to do with food allergy.
The success of the project, which has been supported by a £30,000 grant from Imperial College Healthcare Charity, will be assessed after 12 months.
