DS (almost 12 yrs old) has been coughing nonstop for 2 weeks, tickly unproductive cough, nose a bit blocked, sneezing occasionally. Doctor suggested antihistamine, been taking Cetirizine (Benadryl) for 3 days but no effect whatsoever. No real interest from medical profession as he is well in himself and no fever etc. Anyone else have similar experience, and can anti-histamine take a few days to have an effect? Poor boy is waking up 4-5 times a night every night with cough.

You could try an alternative to cetirazine. Loratidine is another non drowsy anti histamine. It's the one that doesn't work for me but may for your DS . You could also try with the antiH a nasal spray with beta methadone or similar. Not sure of age ranges though so check with pharmacist.

Piriton I think Is yet another but needs taking 4 times a day and makes you drowsy.

I am getting similar symptoms at the moment!

Does sound like hayfever and it can take longer than 3 days for the anti-histamines to really start working. See how he goes over the next couple of days and if still no improvement take him back to the GP.

thanks all for suggestions. Cough seems to be getting looser, not as frequent now but instead he feels like he is going to be sick when he coughs!! Am going to try a different anti-histamine for a few days to see if that helps. Found out that his best friend has had similar for a couple of weeks too although not as bad by the sounds of it.
