Should DD be tested for allergies?

Took DD (11 months) to see GP this morning as she has had several allergic reactions to food.

She comes out in hives mostly round the mouth and has had swollen lips

GP has prescribed piriton to be taken after any reaction?
Is this all they do? Or should she be having any allergy tests done?

I think you should get referred for allergy testing. Lip swelling can be ( but not always) associated with tongue and throat swelling and anaphylactic shock.

Keep a diary of what you feed her and when she has a reaction to try to identify the foods.

The most common ones are dairy, egg, nuts, sesame. fish, celery I think

ring the anaphylaxis campaign for details of nearest pead allergy clinic/immunologist near you.

then take this name to gp , it will help them see that you are serious and require decent support.

good luck.

Thanks so much for the advice

I will start the food diary and definitely find out about allergy testing even if we have to pay ourselves

I would insist on testing. My DS had anaphylaxis a few weeks ago, no previous warning signs. I would have loved to be prepared.

I hope hes well now Smile

Some info I got last week from Specialist Nurse who works with Paediatric Consultant Immunologist was not to use Piriton in cases like this but use Cetirizine instead. She said it works faster and is stronger. She said they recommend bin the piriton.
