Is this an allergy to fish?

OK am getting really fed up with this. I eat fish regularly then 6 months ago was violently sick about 3-4 hours after eating prawns. At the time just put it down to a "dodgy prawn". Then I had exactly the same thing after eating scampi so I've avoided prawns since. Then last week I had the same thing again after eating mackerel and then today after salmon. In between I ate tinned sardines with no problems. Each time it's the same time gap after eating it, I'm violently sick for between 30 mins and an hour and then I'm fine.
I thought allergic reactions were more instantaneous but this is really putting me off all fish. Any ideas?

I would just stop eating fish for a while (say a couple of months) and then try again

then you should be able to see if it is the fish triggering the vomiting

That's exactly what happens to me when I eat mussels. It has happened three times, and I've not eaten them since, as I believe that means I'm allergic to them. Ask your GP next time you visit what he thinks. I'm afraid to try mussels anymore in case the reaction gets more severe. THe last time it happened I only had a tiny bite of dh's starter cos I thought that wouldn't hurt.

I have the same problem...with salmon and cod though. i've had it for years. I've decided it's an intolerance so just tend to steer clear.I'm fine with all tinned fish

Thanks all, I just hate the idea of giving up fish for any length of time but I really don't want this to happen again so I'm going to have to and then try again in a few months. Will mention to my GP as well.

northender my ds skin tested positive to "codfish mix" which represented most fish. He was okay for sardines and tuna though as they are a different type of fish and have a different protein. Incidently he also tested negative for prawns as they are considered to be crustacean. Long story short is that fish allergy can vary but it certainly sounds like you are reacting to fish/prawns. Apparently it is quite common for a seafood allergy to come out later in life. Are you able to be allergy tested??? I would definitely avoid all fish except for the sardines which you seem to be okay with and possibly tuna until you know a little more. My ds was skin tested at 8 months before he had even eaten any fish so we were very lucky, however he is now 2 1/2 and his last testing was negative and he has since had a little taste and went okay with it. If you have developed an allergy to those types of fish it is more than likely to be an allergy that will stay with you. Hope that helps.
